Boxing and poker – maybe a start on something new?

Even though both sports are known for intense action and rough characters, boxing and poker aren’t usually combined. This didn’t stop Gus Hansen (known as one of the biggest full tilt poker names)and Danish poker pro Theo Jorgensen from duking it out. Both know as skilled poker players in both the online poker and live tournament circuit, did quite well as shown in the video.

On the Move: MaxBoxing Rankings 2-2-15

By Derek Bonnett: In 2014, Rocky Juarez did something he had not done in a long time; he strung two victories together for the first time since 2007. Sounds amazing when you put it that way. Not that he actually won two in row (the first was a 2012 stoppage of Antonio Escalante), but that it has been so long since the veteran Juarez has been able to do so. In between those wins, Juarez even took a year off. Juarez’ 2014 win was a surprise decision over Rene Alvarado. Alvarado was a genuine top On the Move: MaxBoxing Rankings 2-2-15

Garcia Gets Long-Awaited Title Shot

Steve Kim (Photo © Chris Farina / Top Rank): It’s taken 30 professional fights but Mikey Garcia is finally on the doorstep of a major world title as he faces WBO beltholder Orlando Salido on Saturday night from the Theater at Madison Square Garden (9:45 p.m., ET/PT, HBO). By today’s standards, especially in the era of four major sanctioning bodies, this is actually a long and winding road. Nowadays, most talented prospects are microwaved and are fighting for a belt within 20 to 25 Garcia Gets Long-Awaited Title Shot

Patience is a Virtue for Garcia

By Steve Kim (Photo © Chris Farina / Top Rank): By this juncture of 2012, featherweight Mikey Garcia thought he’d be working on either a title shot or perhaps even defending a belt. Instead, he is taking on seasoned veteran Jonathan Barros as the opener on HBO’s latest installment of “Boxing After Dark” from the Wynn Resort in Las Vegas. No, it’s certainly not the worst thing in the world to be showcased on the “Network of Champions” but this bout was originally scheduled Patience is a Virtue for Garcia

By Marty Mulcahey: I am in love with the idea of Saul Alvarez, a charismatic, young “champion” who has engaged in 37 professional fights before his 21st birthday. Ivan Calderon earned that status during the course of a seven-year title run and Giovani Segura usurped that prestige by knocking out Calderon in Puerto Rico. The Weekend TV Cheat Sheet: Part Two- Feb. 4, 2011

By Marty Mulcahey: The most competitive bouts of the weekend take place tonight, mostly because matching big-league prospects tough is a hallmark of the vastly underappreciated “ShoBox” series. 2011: Boxing Heaven or near-Dead End like 2010?...Part One

By Marty Mulcahey: I am a contrarian; which means instead of looking back upon a below-average 2010, I chose to look ahead to what should be a stellar year for boxing below the heavyweight division. I Said THAT?! The 2010 Preview Review: Part Two

By Marty Mulcahey: In Part One of the annual preview review, I lamented how journalists making predictions for 2011 are certain in the knowledge that few readers will remember what they wrote in a year’s time. I Said THAT?! The 2010 Preview Review: Part One

By Marty Mulcahey: It’s time for a yearly ritual that, unfortunately for me, borders on self-abuse this time around.
