Boxing and poker – maybe a start on something new?

Even though both sports are known for intense action and rough characters, boxing and poker aren’t usually combined. This didn’t stop Gus Hansen (known as one of the biggest full tilt poker names)and Danish poker pro Theo Jorgensen from duking it out. Both know as skilled poker players in both the online poker and live tournament circuit, did quite well as shown in the video.

David versus Goliath

By David Tyler: Sometime in the year 1019 BC on a warm night in the Valley of Elah, boxing’s first major upset occurred. A young middleweight fighter named David decided he had heard enough boasting from a large heavyweight named Goliath. David also knew that in the unlikely event that he were to win this bout, it would be his signature victory that would carry him to greater rewards in sports and politics. As we all know, David scored a one punch knockout of the much feared Goliath. David had David versus Goliath

On the Move: SecondsOut World Rankings

By Derek Bonnett: Jermain Taylor and Cornelius Bundrage are once again world champions. There, I said it. I wish I would have said it last week, but at that time the very notion of Jermain Taylor and Cornelius Bundrage regaining their former world titles seemed highly unthinkable. In Taylor’s case, the notion seemed laughable to me. Group that with boxing’s persistence to prove itself the “Theater of the Unexpected” and the fact that I haven’t been able to pick a boxing match to save my life... Ruiz Jr. fights his opponent and the judges

By John J. Raspanti: He’s not well known, even in his chosen profession. His professional boxing record (9-4-2, 3 KOs) appears, at least on the surface, to be mediocre. But looks can be deceiving. On the Move: SecondsOut World Rankings

By Derek Bonnett: Aside from the ring action which transpired inside of the squared circles around the world, there was a small buzz on-line concerning professional leather throwing on the international scene in a historical frame of reference. That’s right, the list of candidates for induction into the International Boxing Hall of Fame was released and, thus, generated some mild conversation as far as who was or was not deserving from the modern era. To my surprise, fans were rather harsh in On the Move: SecondsOut World Rankings

The Choynski Chronicles: A Biography of Hall of Fame Boxer Jewish Joe Choynski

Review by John J. Raspanti: Around the turn of the century, pugilist Joe Choynski was almost as famous as reigning heavyweight champion James J. Jeffries. Choynski had earned his respect the old-fashioned way--by never shying away from a challenge. Over the past sixty years, Choynski’s fistic exploits have faded. But a new book written by Christopher J. LaForce restores some of the luster to Choynski’s name... The Choynski Chronicles: A Biography of Hall of Fame Boxer Jewish Joe Choynski

Road warrior Beltran to challenge Crawford for title

By John J. Raspanti: Last year, Ray Beltran traveled to Glasgow, Scotland to face WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns. At that point in his career, Beltran, 33, was best known as Manny Pacquiao’s sparring partner. Most experts predicted that Burns would box circles around the slower Beltran. But Beltran went to Scotland on a mission to win, and after 12 rounds of boxing, most who witnessed the bout believed he deserved the decision. Even Burns’ hometown crowd seemed resigned that the... Fair or not, Melissa McMorrow won’t quit

By John J. Raspanti: Former WBO and WBIF flyweight champion “Mighty” Melissa McMorrow hasn’t fought in the United States in over three years. Circumstances have forced McMorrow, and former champions Ava Knight and Ana Julaton, to become road warriors—which is almost always a disadvantage. Weekend combinations: Mayweather remains perfect, but doesn’t impress the masses

By John J. Raspanti (Image by icheehuahua, MaxBoxing): In many of his films, famed movie director Alfred Hitchcock used a term called a MacGuffin. Usually, a MacGuffin is a plot device that appears to be the central focus of a film, but eventually it loses importance. It may re-appear at the climax of the story, but is normally forgotten.
