Boxing and poker – maybe a start on something new?

Even though both sports are known for intense action and rough characters, boxing and poker aren’t usually combined. This didn’t stop Gus Hansen (known as one of the biggest full tilt poker names)and Danish poker pro Theo Jorgensen from duking it out. Both know as skilled poker players in both the online poker and live tournament circuit, did quite well as shown in the video.

Ramirez has his way with Abraham

By John J. Raspanti: When defending WBO super middleweight champion Arthur Abraham arrived in Las Vegas last week, he expected to be a big favorite to win on April 9. Makes sense. During his 16-year career, Abraham has swapped punches with most of the best fighters in his division, including former champions Carl Froch and Andre Ward. Instead Abraham learned his opponent, unheralded youngster Gilberto Ramirez, was favored by most to defeat him... Ramirez has his way with Abraham

The nine lives of Arthur Abraham

By John J. Raspanti: In a span of 14 months, Arthur Abraham lost three out of four fights. What made the losses so troubling was the fact that Abraham was barely competitive in the matches. Five years ago at the Joe Louis Arena in Detroit Michigan, Andre Dirrell was leading comfortably against Abraham when he slipped to the canvas in round 11. In a desperate move, Abraham felled Dirrell with an illegal blow--drawing an immediate disqualification. Eleven months after his defeat, Carl Froch... The nine lives of Arthur Abraham

Down goes Price

By John J. Raspanti: After the fall, the six-foot, eight-inch giant stood in his corner with a dazed expression on his face, tears rolling down his cheeks. David Price had been knocked out in a professional boxing match for the third time in two years. His plunge had been swift and dramatic. Only three years ago, Price, of Liverpool, ENG. appeared to be on his way to a shot at the heavyweight championship of the world. ESPN had named him prospect of the year. His amateur background... Andre Ward shines in return, Adrien Broner a dud

By John J. Raspanti: Away from the place he calls his "office" for the past 19 months, Andre Ward returned to work last Saturday night with a dominant performance by stopping overmatched Paul Smith at The Oracle Arena in Oakland, California. Prior to his appearance, 31-year-old Ward had been stuck in legal hell with his former promoter, the late Dan Goossen. Ward wanted out of his contract. Both sides pointed fingers. Ward sued, and lost. His career sat in limbo... Andre Ward shines in return, Adrien Broner a dud

Ready to make a point: Andre Ward returns to the ring

By John J. Raspanti: “But GGG is like all punchers. That’s why with a guy like GGG, -- you have to show them, and by the time they figure it out, guess what? Fight’s over." - Andre Ward. In 2004, Andre Ward surprised many by capturing the gold medal at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece. Ward debuted as a professional a year later when he beat Chris Molina. In 2008, he defeated Jerson Ravelo to win NABO super middleweight title. There were whispers about the strength of Ward’s chin and. Ready to make a point: Andre Ward returns to the ring

Abraham leaves no doubt in return match with Smith

By John J. Raspanti: WBO super middleweight titleholder Arthur Abraham (42-4, 28 KOs) defeated Paul Smith (35-5, 20 KOs) for the second time in five months Saturday night, but this time more clearly at the O2 World Arena in Berlin, Germany. All three judges had Abraham winning the rematch comfortably by scores of 116-112, 117-111, 117-111. ... Abraham leaves no doubt in return match with Smith

Giant heavyweight Price returns to the ring Feb. 21

By John J. Raspanti: Heavyweight David Price (18-2, 15 KOs) will be in search of his fourth consecutive win this Saturday when he faces virtual unknown Irineu Beato Costa Jr. (16-2, 14 KOs) at the O2 Arena in Kreuzberg, Berlin, Germany. Price, 31, has been sidelined for nine months due to injuries to his hand and his bicep. His fight with Costa Jr. is on the undercard of the Arthur Abraham vs. Paul Smith rematch. An impressive performance is paramount for Price’s future... Giant heavyweight Price returns to the ring Feb. 21

Abraham plans to knock out Smith on Feb. 21

By John J. Raspanti: Paul Smith has managed to get under the skin of WBO super-middleweight champion Arthur Abraham. The pair met last September when Abraham won by unanimous decision. Nearly everyone, excepting Smith’s corner-and his family, had Abraham the victor. The problem was the margin of victory. Two judges scored the fight 117-111 for Abraham, while the third must have been watching another bout. His 119-109 tally was ridiculous. This writer had Abraham ahead by two points. Judges help Abraham escape with wide decision win

By John J. Raspanti: Aging WBO super middleweight champion Arthur Abraham was awarded a dubious 12-round unanimous decision over heavy underdog Paul Smith at the Sparkassen Arena in Kiel, Germany Saturday night. The scores were 117-111 (twice) and a ridiculous 119-109. The judges scoring doesn’t reflect how close and competitive the match was. Maxboxing and Doghouseboxing had Abraham winning the fight 115-113. The bout started fast... Judges help Abraham escape with wide decision win

Title Shots Here! Getcha' Free Title Shot!, Vol. 10

By Derek Bonnett: It’s been awhile. In fact, it’s been since July of 2012 that I felt compelled to write a volume of Title Shots Here! Getcha’ Free Title Shot! That’s not to say there haven’t been an undeserving "contender" or three over the last two years that hasn’t conveniently popped into the rankings of an organizing body just prior to a title fight being announced. There certainly has, but a contender or three isn’t a problem in a two-year period of time. Well, guess what boxing Title Shots Here! Getcha' Free Title Shot!, Vol. 10

Froch-Groves War at Wembley on May 31

By Bill Tibbs: On May 31, a raucous Wembley Stadium in England will be rocking when the rematch between Carl Froch, 32-2 (23), and George Groves, 19-1 (15), lights up London. The iconic soccer stadium should be as heated and lively as the fight between the two United Kingdom brawlers. The first fight ended in a somewhat controversial fashion and Groves is out to prove the stoppage, deemed too quick by some, was just that. Froch will look to erase any “controversy” tag from their first... Froch-Groves War at Wembley on May 31

Make-up Call?

By Steve Kim: Despite Manny Pacquiao and Tim Bradley squaring off back in June of 2012, in the end, they weren’t the two most talked-about individuals involved. That distinction went to Duane Ford and CJ Ross. The two ringside judges were in the vast minority by scoring the fight for the “Desert Storm” in what was considered the 874th black eye for boxing and about the 43rd time the sport died. Alas... The Best Fight of the Weekend?

By Steve Kim: While there is an overflow of coverage in the States revolving around the fight in Macao between Manny Pacquiao and Brandon Rios, to those in Jolly Ol’ England, that event is a mere curiosity. For the Brits, their main focus centers on the super middleweight grudge match between WBA and IBF super middleweight champion Carl Froch and upstart George Groves. Will Stevens Expose the Real “GGG”?

By Gabriel Montoya (Photo © Will Hart / K2): In every Gennady Golovkin vs. Curtis Stevens article that quotes the 28-year-old former “Chin Checker”-turned-middleweight wrecking ball, Stevens comes off like a loud-mouthed dude who didn’t learn much from his early days as a tough-talking but not always hard-training 168 and 175-pound contender (the same contender who either peaked or bottomed out in a lackluster points loss to Jesse Brinkley in January 2010). Has Carl Froch learned from the past?

By Gabriel Montoya: The rematch between Carl “the Cobra” Froch and Mikkel “the Viking Warrior” Kessler is upon us. In the lead up to the fight at the O2 Arena, Froch was unable to get a few answers for my preview piece to me until after it came out. His conference call was cut short when his phone cut off. Thankfully, through Bernie Bahrmasel a connection with Froch was made. This being the first rematch for both men, I was curious if he saw anything different in this preparation that he missed Has Carl Froch learned from the past?

Mikkel Kessler vs. Carl Froch II: Game of Adjustments

By Gabriel Montoya: In any rematch of a close fight, the central question is “Who can adjust and improve from the first fight?” For the past three months of training camp, Carl “The Cobra” Froch and Mikkel Kessler, each preparing for his first career rematch this Saturday at the O2 Arena in London, have attempted to find those answers. Ultimately, however, the outcome may simply come down to desire and a meshing of styles. Azad Championship Report - Big underdog Stieglitz stops Abraham in four

By John J. Raspanti: Robert Stieglitz regained the WBO super middleweight title by stopping defending champion Arthur Abraham after three rounds at a sold-out GTEC Arena in Magdeburg, Germany. The fight was telecast live on EPIX Sports. Stieglitz had said for months that Abraham, who defeated him by unanimous decision last August, was only borrowing the WBO belt.
