Boxing and poker – maybe a start on something new?

Even though both sports are known for intense action and rough characters, boxing and poker aren’t usually combined. This didn’t stop Gus Hansen (known as one of the biggest full tilt poker names)and Danish poker pro Theo Jorgensen from duking it out. Both know as skilled poker players in both the online poker and live tournament circuit, did quite well as shown in the video.

Mares and Santa Cruz battle for LA bragging rights

By John J. Raspanti: They met seven years ago in where else, a boxing gym in Southern California. Both were local products. The two Mexican Americans spared roughly 30 rounds for the next few days. Abner Mares was 22 at the time, Leo Santa Cruz two years younger. Neither will say who had the advantage. When the sparing was over, Mares figured he’d likely fight Santa Cruz again someday in a real fight. “I’ve always thought that when you’re in the gym training with someone around... Darchinyan Set to Destroy His Creation

By Steve Kim (Photo © Chris Farina / Top Rank): Despite getting knocked out by Nonito Donaire in their initial encounter back in the summer of 2007, Vic Darchinyan doesn’t seem to be all that impressed with the “Filipino Flash” heading into their rematch this weekend in Corpus Christi, Texas (HBO, 9:30 p.m., ET/PT) at the American Bank Center. Forget all of Donaire’s lofty accomplishments; Darchinyan still doesn’t see what the fuss is all about. “I’ve been in the ring Darchinyan Set to Destroy His Creation

Chris Pearson: ''I'm going to be a champion. It's just a matter of time.”

By Gabriel Montoya: In mid-August, Trotwood, Ohio’s Chris Pearson’s middleweight campaign took a turn toward greater exposure when he was informed that among the many Al Haymon-advised hopefuls, he’d been picked to appear on “The One: Floyd Mayweather vs. Saul Alvarez” undercard against Josh Williams, a 24-year-old boxer from Sheridan, Arkansas. I wrote about in on Maxboxing.com and it later appeared on our sister site, Doghouseboxing.com... Chris Pearson: ''I'm going to be a champion. It's just a matter of time.”

Mares And Gonzalez Ready For War

By Marc Livitz (Photo © SHOWTIME): While many of us as boxing fans love to count down the days leading up to the next big fight, there are still high numbers of the boxing faithful who truly appreciate the fighter who treads on and on. Those fighters who have fought almost a “who’s who” in the ring can often rouse our interests. He has won most and lost just a handful. Add to the mix one who hails from a boxing crazed nation such as Mexico. Enter Jhonny Gonzalez... Mares And Gonzalez Ready For War

Azad Championship Report - How Does Mares Stack Up?

By Steve Kim (Photo © Gene Blevins - Hoganphotos /Golden Boy Promotions): When you start talking about the elite of boxing, usually Floyd Mayweather, Andre Ward, Juan Manuel Marquez and Sergio Martinez are the names thrown around first and foremost. But there is someone who is often forgotten about according to one Richard Schaefer (who, not so coincidentally, happens to promote this guy): Abner Mares... Setting up a Showdown?

By Steve Kim (Photo © Carlos Delgado, Hoganphotos/ GoldenBoy): It was announced on Thursday afternoon at the El Paseo restaurant at Olvera Street in Los Angeles that Golden Boy Promotions will stage a card on August 24th featuring WBC featherweight champion Abner Mares (who will defend his crown against veteran Jhonny Gonzalez) and a bout for the vacant WBC super bantamweight title between Leo Santa Cruz and Victor Terrazas. As you look at the big picture, there is the sense that this is Setting up a Showdown?

Golden Boy and Top Rank Move Forward (Separately)

By Steve Kim (Image by icheehuahua, MaxBoxing): Boxing is a fluid business; just as quickly as fights take place, new fights are planned months ahead. Such is the case for the two promotional titans of the United States, Golden Boy Promotions and Top Rank, who are steamrolling ahead as they set their respective schedules for the late summer and early fall months (and of course, in the never-ending “Cold War” between the two companies, none of these plans involve each other). Darchinyan Starts Anew

By Steve Kim (Photo © Chris Farina / Top Rank): At age 37 with a bushel full of belts in his collection and 44 fights on his ledger, Vic Darchinyan is by all accounts an old fighter. But as he faces Javier Gallo tonight (UniMas 11:30 ET/PT) from the Uni-Trade Stadium in Laredo, Texas, he is in certain ways very new. There have been a few changes surrounding the “Raging Bull.” “I now have a new manager, new promoter,” he told Maxboxing a few days ago. “I signed with Top Rank. Azad Championship Report - One Down, Five to Go

By Gabriel Montoya (Photo © German Villasenor): Boasting an “All Access” reality series, two “documentaries,” media workout clips, conference calls, guest appearances on crossover platforms and ultimately a fight, the media tidal wave “May Day: Floyd “Money” Mayweather Jr. vs. Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero” was a sight to behold. The fight itself was more an exhibition of the reasons why Mayweather is known as the most gifted and skilled boxer of the modern era. As a compelling prizefight with a Azad Championship Report - One Down, Five to Go

Azad Championship Report - Still on the “Money” at 36

By Steve Kim (Photo © German Villasenor, MaxBoxing): Robert Guerrero is a pretty good professional prizefighter. But it will take someone of much higher caliber to topple Floyd Mayweather, even at age 36, who on Saturday night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in front of nearly 16,000 patrons, easily outboxed “The Ghost” over 12 rounds. The three scorecards that read 117-111 across the board didn’t fully speak to the dominance exhibited by Mayweather. It capped off a good night of action Azad Championship Report - Still on the “Money” at 36

Donaire-Rigondeaux Start Game of Risk

By Steve Kim: This Saturday night at Radio City Music Hall in New York City, junior featherweight champion Nonito Donaire takes on talented Cuban Guillermo Rigondeaux (HBO 11 p.m., ET). A few weeks later, in Las Vegas, in support of Floyd Mayweather’s return against Robert Guerrero, Abner Mares moves up to face WBC featherweight beltholder Daniel Ponce de Leon. Both are two pretty good prizefights between 122 and 126 pounds. But the reality is the fight the public really wanted here was.. Donaire-Rigondeaux Start Game of Risk

I Said That? A 2012 Preview Review: Part One

By Marty Mulcahey: It is that time of the New Year for me again, my yearly ritual of evaluating predictions made over the previous year. It is an annual act which fluctuates wildly between self-abuse and narcissism. Visitors to sports websites are sure to notice how easy it is for writers to make predictions at this time of the year, certain in the knowledge that few will remember what they wrote 365 days from now. Here at Maxboxing, we have higher standards and are held accountable for what is I Said That? A 2012 Preview Review: Part One

The 2013 K9 Awards: Part One

By Steve Kim: Another year has come and passed and it was another 12-month period where we didn’t see Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather square off. And guess what? It was actually still a very eventful and entertaining year for the sport of boxing, regardless. Better yet, it wasn’t completely overtaken by the MMA! (OK, I’m being facetious there.) But seriously, 2012 was a good one for the sport of boxing and its followers. Here’s a look back at what took place this The 2013 K9 Awards: Part One

Can Mares-Donaire Get Made?

By Steve Kim: In the immediate aftermath of Abner Mares’ convincing victory over the respected Anselmo Moreno on November 10th at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, conversations centered on having Mares - who holds the WBC junior featherweight title - face the WBO beltholder, Nonito Donaire, in 2013. It seems like a natural fight, one yearned for by at least the hardcore boxing fans, between two boxers who have been featured regularly on the premium cable networks the past couple of Can Mares-Donaire Get Made?

Banks to Carry on Kronk

By Steve Kim:Johnathon Banks has had perhaps as much on his plate coming into a fight as any boxer in recent memory. Azad Championship Report: Abner Mares Makes It Clear

By Steve Kim: After a hard fought and well deserved victory over Anselmo Moreno on Saturday night at the Staples Center, the reigning WBC junior featherweight champion, Abner Mares, wasn’t in the mood to entertain any other fights but one.
