Boxing and poker – maybe a start on something new?

Even though both sports are known for intense action and rough characters, boxing and poker aren’t usually combined. This didn’t stop Gus Hansen (known as one of the biggest full tilt poker names)and Danish poker pro Theo Jorgensen from duking it out. Both know as skilled poker players in both the online poker and live tournament circuit, did quite well as shown in the video.

Ready to make a point: Andre Ward returns to the ring

By John J. Raspanti: “But GGG is like all punchers. That’s why with a guy like GGG, -- you have to show them, and by the time they figure it out, guess what? Fight’s over." - Andre Ward. In 2004, Andre Ward surprised many by capturing the gold medal at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece. Ward debuted as a professional a year later when he beat Chris Molina. In 2008, he defeated Jerson Ravelo to win NABO super middleweight title. There were whispers about the strength of Ward’s chin and. Ready to make a point: Andre Ward returns to the ring

Azad Championship Report - How Does Mares Stack Up?

By Steve Kim (Photo © Gene Blevins - Hoganphotos /Golden Boy Promotions): When you start talking about the elite of boxing, usually Floyd Mayweather, Andre Ward, Juan Manuel Marquez and Sergio Martinez are the names thrown around first and foremost. But there is someone who is often forgotten about according to one Richard Schaefer (who, not so coincidentally, happens to promote this guy): Abner Mares... Curtis Stevens: “I am ready to take over the middleweight division and be world champion.”

By Gabriel Montoya: “Some people get the Sugar Ray [Leonard] road. Some people get the Hagler road. I’d rather have the Hagler role. Some people are made champions. Some people have to fight to be champion. I have to fight to be a champion. To each his own. I don’t want anything given to me anyway so I’ll take it. That’s what I’m going to do. Take what I want,” middleweight contender Curtis Stevens told Maxboxing.com earlier this week... Curtis Stevens: “I am ready to take over the middleweight division and be world champion.”

Summer Snooze

By Steve Kim: If you’re a boxing fan, right now, you’re pretty much like a football fan - you can’t wait for September. Because from that point on, boxing has a strong slate of fights lined up (headlined by marquee pay-per-view events spaced out a month apart featuring the likes of Floyd Mayweather vs. Saul Alvarez, Tim Bradley vs. Juan Manuel Marquez and Manny Pacquiao vs. Brandon Rios). But as usual, the summer months are a drag for those who follow the “Sweet Science.”... Summer Snooze

Has Carl Froch learned from the past?

By Gabriel Montoya: The rematch between Carl “the Cobra” Froch and Mikkel “the Viking Warrior” Kessler is upon us. In the lead up to the fight at the O2 Arena, Froch was unable to get a few answers for my preview piece to me until after it came out. His conference call was cut short when his phone cut off. Thankfully, through Bernie Bahrmasel a connection with Froch was made. This being the first rematch for both men, I was curious if he saw anything different in this preparation that he missed Has Carl Froch learned from the past?

Mikkel Kessler vs. Carl Froch II: Game of Adjustments

By Gabriel Montoya: In any rematch of a close fight, the central question is “Who can adjust and improve from the first fight?” For the past three months of training camp, Carl “The Cobra” Froch and Mikkel Kessler, each preparing for his first career rematch this Saturday at the O2 Arena in London, have attempted to find those answers. Ultimately, however, the outcome may simply come down to desire and a meshing of styles. At Wednesday’s final press conference, the men’s opposing styles could Mikkel Kessler vs. Carl Froch II: Game of Adjustments

By Steve Kim: This Saturday at the O2 Arena in London, England, a highly anticipated rematch takes place in the super middleweight division between Mikkel Kessler and Carl Froch (HBO, 6 p.m., ET/3 p.m. PT and 10 p.m., ET). The first time they met was back on April 24th, 2010 in Hernig, Denmark, where Kessler won a hard-fought, exciting unanimous decision in one of the better fights of Showtime’s “Super Six” series. Azad Championship Report - Can the "Viking Warrior" Charm "The Cobra"?

By Gabriel Montoya: A rematch of a fight as savage and closely contested as the April 24, 2010 fight between Denmark’s Mikkel “The Viking Warrior” Kessler, 46-2-0 (35), and Nottingham, U.K.’s Carl “The Cobra” Froch, 30-2 (22), begs many questions. The 2013 K9 Awards: Part One

By Steve Kim: Another year has come and passed and it was another 12-month period where we didn’t see Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather square off. And guess what? It was actually still a very eventful and entertaining year for the sport of boxing, regardless. Better yet, it wasn’t completely overtaken by the MMA! (OK, I’m being facetious there.) But seriously, 2012 was a good one for the sport of boxing and its followers. Here’s a look back at what took place this The 2013 K9 Awards: Part One
