Boxing and poker – maybe a start on something new?

Even though both sports are known for intense action and rough characters, boxing and poker aren’t usually combined. This didn’t stop Gus Hansen (known as one of the biggest full tilt poker names)and Danish poker pro Theo Jorgensen from duking it out. Both know as skilled poker players in both the online poker and live tournament circuit, did quite well as shown in the video.

Cotto vs. Canelo: The next chapter of an historic rivalry

By Nicholas Phillipowsy: In just a few days, we will perhaps be witnessing the biggest fight that can be made in a post Mayweather/Pacquiao era of boxing. Aside from the record breaking Mayweather/Pacquiao super fight, this bout will prove to be second to none. Even though it will be remembered in history as the second biggest fight of 2015, many would argue it as the most significant fight that can be made to determine the future landscape of boxing. On Saturday, November 21, 2015... Cotto vs. Canelo: The next chapter of an historic rivalry

Rising Mendez faces Lopez in important 10 rounder

By John J. Raspanti: Paul “El Gallo Negro” Mendez (18-2, 9 KOs) returns to the ring for the third time this year when he faces David “The Destroyer” Lopez (41-15-1, 25 KOs) June 26 at the Salinas Storm House in Salinas, California. Mendez turned professional in 2009. He was victorious in his first two bouts, but lost his third. Learning on the job, Mendez worked with trainer Virgil Hunter and sparred with super middleweight champion Andre Ward. It was obvious that Mendez had talent, but was raw Rising Mendez faces Lopez in important 10 rounder

Canelo Alvarez faces dangerous James Kirkland May 9

By John J. Raspanti: It’s easy to forget that Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, who meets heavy-handed James Kirkland this Saturday night at Minute Maid Park in Houston, Texas, is only 24 years old. But, in a sense, he’s a veteran since he was 15 when he started boxing. Alvarez sports a gaudy record of 44 wins and one defeat. That loss was to the best fighter of his generation, Floyd Mayweather. Kirkland is a powerful southpaw with 28 knockouts in his 31 wins. The only blemish on his record came a Canelo Alvarez faces dangerous James Kirkland May 9

Lemieux is not afraid of the Big Bad Wolf!

By Jason Gonzalez (Image by icheehuahua, MaxBoxing): Brooklyn, NY - Who’s afraid of the big bad wolf? For certain, it isn’t David Lemieux, who recently fought for the first time outside of his native Canada. Lemieux, now 33-2, (31) turned up in the borough of kings, displaying prodigious power and surgical precision en route to a 10th round technical knockout of 28 year-old Gabriel Rosado of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. On the track, “Brooklyn We Go Hard”, Jay-Z eloquently articulated... Lemieux is not afraid of the Big Bad Wolf!

Canelo Makes The Jump To HBO

By Marc Livitz: As the respective chapters close on the colorful and always debatable careers of Floyd Mayweather, Jr. and Manny Pacquiao, the sweet science will undoubtedly have its new crop of torchbearers in the coming years. Meanwhile, the sports crazed nation of Mexico has always had its nationalistic hands full when it comes to the legends of the sport. The boxing hotbox has given us such legends as Julio Cesar Chavez, Ruben Olivarez, Ricardo Lopez and Salvador Sanchez. In recent years, Canelo Makes The Jump To HBO

Weekend combinations: Mayweather remains perfect, but doesn’t impress the masses

By John J. Raspanti (Image by icheehuahua, MaxBoxing): In many of his films, famed movie director Alfred Hitchcock used a term called a MacGuffin. Usually, a MacGuffin is a plot device that appears to be the central focus of a film, but eventually it loses importance. It may re-appear at the climax of the story, but is normally forgotten. This past Saturday night, the MacGuffin heading into the rematch between pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather and Marcos Maidana, was that Mayweather’s legs Weekend combinations: Mayweather remains perfect, but doesn’t impress the masses

Team Predictions for Alvarez vs. Lara

By Clive Bernath (Photo © Esther Lin / SHOWTIME): Saul Alvarez and Saul Alvarez and Erislandy Lara clash in a non title bout ppv (Pay-per-view) showdown at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on Saturday and SecondOut’s writers once again put their reputations on the line to predict the outcome. Will Alvarez prove he’s the better fighter July 12?

By John J. Raspanti: Could Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, who fights Erislandy Lara this Saturday night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, NV, actually be conducting his training camp like a full-fledged diva? According to a story that appeared in Livefight.com, the answer is a resounding yes. An unnamed camp insider was quoted as saying, “It’s like Alvarez isn’t even in full training right now. He’s picking and choosing when to train, he’s sending sparring partners home… Will Alvarez prove he’s the better fighter July 12?

Mikey Garcia vs. Top Rank

By Steve Kim (Photo © German Villasenor): It turns out that the big fight for WBO super featherweight titlist Mikey Garcia in 2014 will not be against Yuriorkis Gamboa but against his own promoter, Top Rank Promotions, who he recently filed suit against in a story broken by BadCulture.net. You could see this coming a mile (or least a month ago) away when Garcia accompanied his brother/trainer Robert Garcia to Las Vegas for the Saul Alvarez-Alfredo Angulo fight, which was promoted... Make-up Call?

By Steve Kim: Despite Manny Pacquiao and Tim Bradley squaring off back in June of 2012, in the end, they weren’t the two most talked-about individuals involved. That distinction went to Duane Ford and CJ Ross. The two ringside judges were in the vast minority by scoring the fight for the “Desert Storm” in what was considered the 874th black eye for boxing and about the 43rd time the sport died. Alas... Martirosyan Begins New Chapter

By Steve Kim: Tonight from the Morongo Casino Resort and Spa, Vanes Martirosyan headlines this week’s edition of ESPN2’s “Friday Night Fights” when he faces Mario Lozano. After 35 professional contests under his belt, this will be the first that won’t take place under the Top Rank Promotions banner. After his loss to Demetrius Andrade back in November, he was given a release by the company. Martirosyan then inked a deal with Dan Goossen to promote his career moving forward... A Golden Rift?

By Steve Kim: In lieu of any real meaningful fights taking place this month, the biggest scuttlebutt in the boxing business centers on the relationship between Golden Boy Promotions Founder Oscar De la Hoya and its CEO, Richard Schaefer. Numerous industry insiders are indicating there is a significant rift between the two over the direction of the company and its investors are said to be asking questions about its finances. It’s not clear if this is headed toward a divorce but it’s A Golden Rift?

Is Scott Running Out of Time?

By Steve Kim: Despite an impressive looking record of 36-1-1 (13), you’ve always gotten the sense that heavyweight Malik Scott has underachieved, that he should have accomplished more by this stage of his career and in essence, he’s left money on the table. As you say this to him, he doesn’t get angry or upset. In fact, the personable Scott sees where you’re coming from. “I wouldn’t say I totally disagree with it but I would say I see why you could say that. But Is Scott Running Out of Time?

Danny Garcia: Puerto Rico's Lone Champion Goes Home

By Gabriel Montoya: Danny Garcia takes exception at the idea that Puerto Rico is - for the first time in a long time - without a boxing champion to call its own. “I don’t think it’s fair that you can say I’m not a Puerto Rican fighter because I wasn’t born in Puerto Rico, when my blood is Puerto Rican. So I had to let the fans know; hey, I’m a Puerto Rican fighter and that’s just the way it is and March 15, that’s why we got this fight in Puerto Rico, to solidify me as a Puerto Rican champion,” Danny Garcia: Puerto Rico's Lone Champion Goes Home

Weeks’ Stoppage Was the Right Call

By Steve Kim (Photo © German Villasenor / CANELO RED DEVIL by Chee, MaxBoxing): The boos cascaded from the rafters of the sold-out MGM Grand Garden Arena - as did the beer (or at least we all hope that was just Corona) - as referee Tony Weeks suddenly waved off the bout between Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Alfredo Angulo after a uppercut sent Angulo’s head snapping back at the beginning of the 10th round. Alvarez and Angulo to Go “TOE TO TOE”

By Bill Tibbs (Photo © Tom Casino / SHOWTIME): Tonight, Mexican superstar Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, 42-1-1 (30), will make his first appearance of 2014. It will also be his first fight since his only career loss (to reigning pound-for-pound king Floyd “Money” Mayweather) back in September of 2013. El Perro Finally Gets His Wish

By Gabriel Montoya (Photo © German Villasenor, MaxBoxing): At age 31 but with only 25 fights on his odometer, Mexicali-born junior middleweight contender Alfredo “El Perro” Angulo is both young and old in the sport of boxing. By Gabriel Montoya: On Monday morning, beginning the press tour for his May 3 Showtime pay-per-view bout with Marcos “Chino” Maidana early, Floyd Mayweather Jr. tweeted, “I don’t have an easy fight on May 3, 2014, so I can’t over look @ChinoMaidana but @AmirKingKhan, if you and @AdrienBroner end up fighting... each other on my show and you win (which you won’t)... The Curious Case of Miguel Vazquez

By Steve Kim (Photo © German Villasenor, MaxBoxing): While the feature performer in Macao, China this weekend is two-time Chinese Olympic gold medalist Zou Shiming, the best fight from the Cotai Arena at the Venetian Resort today features IBF lightweight titlist Miguel Vazquez, who takes on the challenge of the hard-charging Russian, Denis Shafikov. The Soapbox: Thawing the Cold War

By Steve Kim: A few days ago I was tweeting (which I do quite a bit) on the recent situation regarding Erislandy Lara’s calling out of Gennady Golovkin. It’s certainly a solid match-up. Lara is one of the sports premiere 154-pounders and Golovkin has developed a reputation as one of the most feared fighters in the game as the WBA middleweight titlist. In a perfect world, this fight would occur but we all know we currently live in the “Cold War” era of boxing. Because of Lara’s The Soapbox: Thawing the Cold War

By Steve Kim (Pic created by © Chee, MaxBoxing): This upcoming weekend was supposed to be the date for the rematch between WBC featherweight titlist Jhonny Gonzalez and Abner Mares from the Staples Center. But when Mares pulled out of the fight citing a rib injury (an alibi Gonzalez and his camp still aren’t buying), it meant - other than a couple of “ShoBox” telecasts - Showtime would not be televising any major boxing cards this month. Is the Bute Bubble About to Burst?

By Steve Kim: Tonight at the Bell Centre, a Montreal showdown takes place between Jean Pascal and Lucian Bute. And for Bute, much more than the NABF light heavyweight title or city bragging rights are on the line. Simply put, for the 33-year-old native of Romania, this is a referendum on his whole career.
