Boxing and poker – maybe a start on something new?

Even though both sports are known for intense action and rough characters, boxing and poker aren’t usually combined. This didn’t stop Gus Hansen (known as one of the biggest full tilt poker names)and Danish poker pro Theo Jorgensen from duking it out. Both know as skilled poker players in both the online poker and live tournament circuit, did quite well as shown in the video.

Gomez gets the better of Kamegai

By John J. Raspanti: Alfonso Gomez (25-6-2, 12 KOs) boxed and slugged his way to a hard-fought 10 round unanimous decision over aggressive Yoshihiro Kamegai (25-3-1, 22 KOs) Friday night at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino in Indio, California. Gomez, 34, was quicker and busier throughout the match. In round one, he caught Kamegai, a southpaw, with a number of overhand rights. Kamegai worked the body—his thinking likely being that the 34-year-old Gomez would eventually run out of gas... Gomez gets the better of Kamegai

Gomez and Kamegai set for potential barn burner on Fox Sports 1

By John J. Raspanti: Tonight on FOX 1 Sports and Fox Deportes, perennial contender Alfonso Gomez (24-6-2, 12 KOs) will battle Yoshihiro Kamegai (25-2-1, 22 KOs) at the Fantasy Springs Casino, in Indio, California. Competing in the hit TV show "The Contender" 11 years ago brought Gomez fame, if not fortune. Gomez was one of 16 contestants vying for a million dollars. By the end of the tournament he was ranked third, not bad for a guy who some thought wouldn’t make it out of the first Gomez and Kamegai set for potential barn burner on Fox Sports 1

By Bill Tibbs: When Jesus Soto Karass enters the ring on Saturday night at the StubHub Center in Carson, California, he will venture into difficult but familiar territory. The North Hollywood, California resident will face off against former world champion Devon Alexander in a fight that is his third straight tough outing in a career of tough outings. His last two bouts saw him tangling with former world champion Andre Berto in July of last year before he closed out the year against tough, Jesus Soto Karass: Old-School Tough Guy

The Rise of Ruslan

By Steve Kim (Photo © German Villasenor, MaxBoxing): There was a time when Ruslan Provodnikov - who faces Chris Algieri in defense of his WBO junior welterweight title from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn (HBO 10 p.m., ET/PT) - could walk into a room with his hair on fire and go unnoticed. Nowadays at least when he goes to fights or other boxing-related functions, he finds himself the center of attention from adoring fans. No longer is this hard man from Siberia the proverbial beige spot on the The Rise of Ruslan

Alvarez and Angulo to Go “TOE TO TOE”

By Bill Tibbs (Photo © Tom Casino / SHOWTIME): Tonight, Mexican superstar Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, 42-1-1 (30), will make his first appearance of 2014. It will also be his first fight since his only career loss (to reigning pound-for-pound king Floyd “Money” Mayweather) back in September of 2013. Saul will take on always-tough Alfredo Angulo, 22-3-0 (18), at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. While the loss to Mayweather didn’t hurt Alvarez’s... Alvarez and Angulo to Go “TOE TO TOE”

Team Mom

By Steve Kim (Photo © K9 Photos): When you join Garcia Boxing, you’re not just getting a trainer or a manager; you’re getting a family. Because while they may not dole out signing bonuses or a monthly salary to the fighters they work with, what they do provide is a roof to live under, three square meals and more importantly to some, structure and stability. Max and Kathy Garcia bring a human touch to an often cold and impersonal business. But yeah, every fighter they work with Team Mom

Former De La Hoya trainer Robert Alcazar: "Canelo has only a 20% chance to win"

By Gabriel Montoya: The publicity train for “The One: Mayweather vs. Canelo” cannot be stopped. The fighters have arrived at the MGM Grand Garden Arena and the talking heads have had their say at the final press conference podium. Now all that’s left are pre-fight predictions and the all-male anorexic beauty pageant that is Friday’s gala weigh-in where we’ll all get the first answer of a two-part question... Porter vs. Diaz: The Sequel

By Bill Tibbs (Image poster by Chee, MaxBoxing): When undefeated welterweight prospect Shawn Porter steps in the ring on September 12th (Fox Sports 2 Network) he will be looking to avenge the 1 career blemish on his undefeated record, that being a 10 round draw with Coachella, California’s Julio Diaz from their December 2012 bout. That being said, Porter’s task may be a lot easier said than done. A quick glance at Diaz’s last 4 fights sees him at 2-1-1, but many boxing pundits... Porter vs. Diaz: The Sequel

Fight Night Provides Springboard

By Steve Kim: This Saturday night from the Mohegan Sun in Connecticut, the latest installment of the “Fight Night” series on the NBC Sports Network (10:30 p.m., ET) takes place. It’s a tripleheader featuring middleweight Curtis Stevens, cruiserweight Eddie Chambers and heavyweight Tomasz Adamek. This series, which began in January of 2012, has provided two things on a consistent basis: solid entertainment and a springboard for boxers to go and perform on bigger (and more lucrative) Fight Night Provides Springboard

Azad Championship Report: No Sprinkling of Cinnamon on May 4th

By Steve Kim: The big news last week was that WBC junior middleweight titlist Saul “Canelo” Alvarez would be facing WBA beltholder Austin Trout in one of the more intriguing and anticipated bouts of 2013. But in a new change of plans, it would not be taking place May 4th on the undercard of Floyd Mayweather’s bout against Robert Guerrero at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Instead, Alvarez made the decision to go fishing on April 20th... Azad Championship Report: No Sprinkling of Cinnamon on May 4th

Azad Championship Report: The Weekend TV Cheat Sheet – Feb. 22, 2013

By Marty Mulcahey: Boxing fans are spoiled for choice this weekend with seven televised shows if widely available Spanish television networks are included in their viewing habits. This excess of action motivated me to try something new; instead of focusing on only one card, I am cherry-picking two world title fight main events since their undercards are lacking in either intrigue or competitiveness. I have been asked about other bouts this weekend as well and decided to make picks for other Azad Championship Report: The Weekend TV Cheat Sheet – Feb. 22, 2013

The Showtime Championship Boxing TV Cheat Sheet – Jan. 26, 2013

By Marty Mulcahey (Photo © Craig Bennett / SHOWTIME): Tonight’s Showtime card is about excitement and how that word possesses redemptive qualities with fighters. Headliner Lucas Matthysse is proof that a boxer who takes a chance fighting the best but loses courageously will be asked to return and can go on to become a regular television attraction. The Argentine’s two career losses were by split decision on HBO and Showtime but he fought with skill (knocking down both opponents) and, more The Showtime Championship Boxing TV Cheat Sheet – Jan. 26, 2013

Is Gatti “Broadway Joe”?

By Steve Kim: There has been a lot of debate and conjecture this week about whether Arturo “Thunder” Gatti deserves induction into the International Boxing Hall of Fame. Since I’m not a member of the Boxing Writers Association of America, I don’t have a vote, so I really don’t have a say or stake in this whole argument. And I don’t want to be known as a waffler or a fence-sitter but I really think it’s a 50-50 proposition either way. There is a strong case for and Is Gatti “Broadway Joe”?
