Boxing and poker – maybe a start on something new?

Even though both sports are known for intense action and rough characters, boxing and poker aren’t usually combined. This didn’t stop Gus Hansen (known as one of the biggest full tilt poker names)and Danish poker pro Theo Jorgensen from duking it out. Both know as skilled poker players in both the online poker and live tournament circuit, did quite well as shown in the video.

Walking the plank with David Price

David Price is a professional fighter. He stands six-foot-eight, and weights over 250 pounds, but he’s not particularity intimidating, especially to other fighters. Why is that?  Because they know his weakness, his Achilles heel, his kryptonite. By John J. Raspanti Walking the plank with David Price

Is heavyweight Joseph Parker biting off more than he can chew?

By John J. Raspanti: Moving up from the minor to the major leagues, undefeated heavyweight Joseph Parker is hopeful he won’t strike out on May 21st) when he faces ranking contender Carlos Takam at the Vodafone Events Centre in Manukau City, New Zealand. “My goal is to box smartly and use my distance and reach and move around,” Parker said in an article written by Duncan Johnstone of www.stuff.co.nz. "A Born Teacher Returns"

By Allan Scotto (Photo © German Villasenor): On November 7th, 2015, Timothy “Desert Storm” Bradley did something that he hasn’t done since November 12th, 2011. He knocked someone out. But, not just anyone, he knocked out Brandon Rios, a rough and tumble fighter who had never been knocked out before! The loss was so devastating for Rios; he emotionally announced his retirement before he even left the ring. That is a very different story than what happened when Bradley... "A Born Teacher Returns"

Top 10 Year in Review

By Mikko Salo: The year 2014 saw the heavyweight division gather momentum on different fronts. In Europe, the main market in today`s heavyweight landscape, the Undisputed Champion Wladimir Klitschko fought a 5-round barnburner against top contender Kubrat Pulev. The entertaining HBO-televised match-up proved us once again what kind of a special era in heavyweight boxing we are all witnessing. On the Move: SecondsOut World Rankings

By Derek Bonnett (Photo © German Villasenor, Max Boxing): The world of professional fisticuffs yields plenty of surprises, typically the direct result of unprofessional behavior, poor officiating, or dubious scoring. However, one of the biggest surprises this weekend was produced from a very positive interaction. After decimating Nonito Donaire -- former Pound for Pound number three --, Jamaica’s Nicholas Walters engaged his vanquished foe yet again after the bout concluded. Only this time, it On the Move: SecondsOut World Rankings

Huck: “I will make spaghetti out of Larghetti”

By John J. Raspanti: WBO cruiserweight champion Marco Huck doesn’t fear unlucky numbers. This Saturday night at the Gerry Stadium in Halle/Westphalia, Germany, Huck will attempt to defend his title for the 13th time when he faces undefeated Italian challenger Mirko Larghetti. A victory by Huck will equal the number of defenses set by Johnny Nelson. The bout was originally scheduled for last March until Huck (37-2-1, 26 KOs), broke his thumb in training. Bayamon Bomb?

By Gabriel Montoya (Photo © Tom Casino / SHOWTIME) WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia got away with one on Saturday night. Billed as a “homecoming fight” at the Coliseo Ruben Rodriguez in Bayamon, Puerto Rico, it all became anything but as Mauricio Herrera, a perennial also-ran who is no easy out, beat Garcia in all facets of the fight except with the judges. Over 12 rounds, Herrera hounded Garcia with elusive pressure, a steady double jab to the head and body and (sneaky)... Bayamon Bomb?

Boxing's Waxing and Waning Futures Look Bright

By Gabriel Montoya: Boxing is a lot like life. It ebbs and flows, ends and starts anew every day. This past Saturday saw that life cycle in effect with the return of 32-year-old Puerto Rican superstar Miguel Cotto. On the same card, we saw the continued development of Felix “Diamante” Verdejo. Across the pond, 24-year-old Scott Quigg, a Bury, Lancashire super bantamweight, fought to a draw with Yoandris Salinas and in the process, likely gained a wealth of experience, becoming the “regular” WBA Boxing's Waxing and Waning Futures Look Bright

Marquez Turns the Page

By Steve Kim: Juan Manuel Marquez will be paired up with Tim Bradley for the latter’s WBO welterweight title at the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas this Saturday night. Marquez will forever be linked to one Manny Pacquiao, with whom he engaged in a historic four-fight rivalry. Their most recent meeting took place in December, ending with Marquez exorcising the demons of the past by leaving the fabled “Pac-Man” face-down and lifeless on the canvas with a perfectly timed counter right hand... Cotto wakes up boxing fans, drops and stops Rodriguez in three

By Gabriel Montoya (Photo © Chris Farina / Top Rank): Atop a split-site triple-header that pitted boxing fans’ love of the sweet science vs. how much boredom they could take, Miguel Cotto dropped and stopped Delvin Rodriguez at 2:42 of the third round in front of 11,912 adoring fans at the Amway Center in Orlando, Florida. For two bouts on Saturday’s HBO telecast, boxing fans must have felt like they wandered into some sort of pyramid scheme to take their money while putting them to Cotto wakes up boxing fans, drops and stops Rodriguez in three

New Cotto, Old Cotto?

By Steve Kim: Throughout his career, Miguel Cotto, who makes his 2013 debut against Delvin Rodriguez this Saturday night at the Amway Center in Orlando, Florida (HBO 9:45 p.m., ET), has been through a gamut of trainers. From family members (his uncle, Evangelista) to unknowns (Joe Santiago) to Hall-of-Famers (the late, great Emanuel Steward) to those with deep amateur backgrounds (Pedro Diaz). But when he steps into the ring this weekend, Freddie Roach will be working his corner... New Cotto, Old Cotto?

Three is not a Crowd

By Steve Kim: Before David Haye suffered a cut in sparring that nixed his bout against Tyson Fury, HBO was scheduled to telecast a tripleheader (from three different sites, no less) this upcoming weekend. Get Ready for a Fast and Furious Fall

By Steve Kim: With the turn of the calendar and the summer coming to a close, boxing (which had been in a relative slumber) comes back to life starting this week. Maxboxing readers and fans often ask me, “Why do boxing and the networks shut it down between June and August?” The answer is very simple; since it’s evident that television viewing levels are down in the summer months (as people go on vacation, etc.), promoters and television execs aren’t as willing to stage major cards Get Ready for a Fast and Furious Fall

Azad Championship Report - Santa Cruz Faces His Toughest Test

By Steve Kim (Photo © K9 Photos): Co-headlining this Saturday night’s card from the StubHub Center (Showtime 10:30 p.m., ET/7:30 p.m., PT) is Leo Santa Cruz, a fighter on quite a run recently. At this time last year, he was still just a relatively unknown beltholder still trying to gain a foothold in the business. Tony “The Tiger” Thompson: the Boxer Who Came in from the Old

By Gabriel Montoya: Fans always talk about how screwed up the heavyweights are. Our late old friend and historian Bert Sugar used to tell anyone and everyone who would listen that if you put the world’s top heavyweights in a police line-up, in full fight gear and title belt regalia, no one would know who they were. But that joke is old. Sure, Joe Frazier isn’t even approaching the building much walking through that door but there is more to boxing’s glamour division than meets the eye... Azad Championship Report - Has the "Good Boy" Arrived?

By Steve Kim (Photo © Will Hart / K2): What was thought to be a relatively tough test for WBA middleweight beltholder Gennady Golovkin, this past Saturday night at the Foxwoods in Mashantucket, Connecticut, was instead a one-sided demolition. With one devastatingly accurate and well-placed left hook to Matthew Macklin’s right side in the middle of the third round, it was over.
