Boxing and poker – maybe a start on something new?

Even though both sports are known for intense action and rough characters, boxing and poker aren’t usually combined. This didn’t stop Gus Hansen (known as one of the biggest full tilt poker names)and Danish poker pro Theo Jorgensen from duking it out. Both know as skilled poker players in both the online poker and live tournament circuit, did quite well as shown in the video.

Lundy: "Whoever is out there, I'm ready"

Once again, "Hammerin’" Hank Lundy finds himself searching for an opponent, and, as usual, the Philadelphia slugger isn’t choosy about who he steps in the ring with. Lundy: "Whoever is out there, I'm ready"

Garcia vs. Matthysse Looks to Steal the Show

Bill Tibbs: Fight fans are optimistic that the Saul Alvarez vs. Floyd Mayweather bout (September 14th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Showtime Pay-Per-View) does have potential for some real fireworks. However, these same fans were really excited at the undercard shootout announced shortly thereafter. Philadelphia’s Danny “Swift” Garcia will defend his World Boxing Council (WBC) super lightweight title and his World Boxing Association (WBA) super lightweight title against power-punching A Garcia vs. Matthysse Looks to Steal the Show

Lundy Comes Back with Upset of Olusegun

Stephen Tobey at ringside - SALEM, N.H. – After back-to-back losses, Hank Lundy may have been a little desperate. On Friday night, he made sure he wasn’t going to pick up another loss, capturing a 10-round unanimous decision over Ajose Olusegun at Rockingham Park. Lundy Comes Back with Upset of Olusegun

The Reinvention of the Latin Snake

By Steve Kim (Photo © K9 Photos): On September 18th, 2010, Sergio Mora faced Shane Mosley at the Staples Center in perhaps the biggest opportunity of his professional life. Sure, it was notable that he won the inaugural season of “The Contender” and had captured the WBC junior middleweight title by besting Vernon Forrest but to face a future Hall-of-Famer as the headlining performer on a pay-per-view card in his home city, well, that was something else. It also turned out to be the worst night The Reinvention of the Latin Snake

Can Peterson Dismantle “The Machine”? (Part Two of Two)

By Steve Kim: There is a bit of mythology regarding Lucas Matthysse, who is Lamont Peterson’s foe this Saturday night at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City (Showtime 9 p.m., ET/PT). Yes, he is certainly a formidable 140-pounder and possesses heavy hands and a certain toughness that cannot be taught. But if you look at his actual résumé, you’ll see two disputed losses in his biggest fights (versus Zab Judah and Devon Alexander) and his most notable win, against Ajose Olusegun. Yeah, we Can Peterson Dismantle “The Machine”? (Part Two of Two)

I Said That? A 2012 Preview Review: Part Two

By Marty Mulcahey: In Part One of the annual “Preview Review,” I lamented journalists making predictions in 2012 certain in the knowledge that few readers will remember what was penned 365 days ago. To write for Maxboxing is to be held to a higher standard. To that end, I venture back in time to review my predictions for 2012, a yearly ritual of evaluating choices that fluctuates between self-abuse and narcissism. Again, I encourage readers to take a look around the ‘Net. I don’t think you will I Said That? A 2012 Preview Review: Part Two

Will Showtime Be “Super”?

By Steve Kim: There has been a lot of chatter that WBC/WBA junior welterweight champion Danny Garcia will be facing perennial contender and former champion Zab Judah in his next bout at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, where Garcia “Swift”-ly took care of Erik Morales last weekend. From Showtime’s perspective, that fight would be acceptable for its airwaves. The head of Showtime Sports, Stephen Espinoza, told Maxboxing earlier this week, “I think that would be an attractive fight. Zab has Will Showtime Be “Super”?

Barclays Random Thoughts

By Steve Kim (Photo © Tom Casino / SHOWTIME): The Barclays Center in Brooklyn still has the new arena smell to it (at least that’s what I’ve been told) and it hosted its first ever fight card this past weekend. And it was a mixed bag on this Showtime-televised quadruple-header, which was to have featured four title fights on the bill. Much of the talk leading into Saturday centered on the status of Erik Morales, who... Barclays Random Thoughts

The Divide

By Steve Kim: The numbers are in from the conflicting cards in Las Vegas staged between Top Rank and Golden Boy. The shows at the Thomas and Mack Center and the MGM Grand each did well at the box-office (although many have raised doubts about the veracity of the figures from the promotion featuring Saul “Canelo” Alvarez) with Showtime reporting strong Nielsen numbers and HBO Pay-Per-View announcing 475,000 buys for the Sergio Martinez-Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. fight... Azad Championship Report: It’s Still Showtime for Matthysse

By Steve Kim (Photo © Tom Casino / SHOWTIME): Even though the bout between IBF welterweight titleholder Randall Bailey (who suffered a back injury) and Devon Alexander has been pushed back, Showtime (9 p.m., ET/PT) decided to move forward with its card on Saturday night. The new main event from the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas is a tussle for the interim WBC junior welterweight title between Lucas Matthysse and Ajose Olusegun. It says here that... Meanwhile, in Newark…

By Steve Kim: While most of the focus of the boxing world will be on the supposedly important bout in Oakland between Chad Dawson and Andre Ward in Oakland on HBO (and, to a lesser degree, the card in Las Vegas featuring the junior welterweight tussle between Lucas Matthysse and Ajose Olusegun on Showtime on Saturday night), that afternoon has a card taking place at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, featuring Tomasz Adamek... Reunited and It Feels so Good

By Steve Kim: When Johnny Molina steps into the ring to challenge WBC lightweight beltholder Antonio DeMarco at the Oracle this Saturday night in Oakland, Joe Goossen will be in his corner. For a period of time after his upset win over Hank Lundy in July of 2010, they were estranged. What looked to be a good pairing was no more and Molina - who went into litigation versus his promoter (which happened to be Joe’s brother, Dan) - saw his career stall. Goossen went... Mora Has Texas-Sized Indigestion

By Steve Kim (Photo © German Villasenor): By Monday afternoon, Sergio Mora still hadn’t fully come to grips or digested what had taken place this past weekend at the Illusions Theater in San Antonio, Texas. Taking on Brian Vera - who had defeated him back in February of 2011 - a much better and more focused version of “The Latin Snake” evaded most of Vera’s two-fisted attack and counterpunched effectively throughout... Healthy and Fit, Smith Faces Cintron

By Steve Kim: Last summer, coming off a string of eye-opening, upset victories against the likes of Norberto Gonzalez, Richard Gutierrez and Henry Crawford, Antwone “The Truth” Smith was one of the sport’s rising young prospects. Partners in Crime

By Steve Kim: Now I’m not the one to go all Dan Rafael or “Harry Hardcore” every time a sanctioning organization makes what amounts to a business deal for its own self-interest. For all the faults of these alphabet groups (and there are many), there are bigger, more pressing issues that plague this business. The reason why some keep battering them is because they are easy targets and it’s become cliché. Want to look like a real muckraker? Rip Jose Sulaiman. Yeah, that’ll make Partners in Crime
