Ensenada, B.C., Mexico- Former WBO world super bantamweight champion Daniel Ponce de Leon walked into enemy territory against Omar Estrella and after six rounds of beating up the Tijuanense fighter, the lopsided battering was called off. Ponce de Leon came out unscathed and took home a much-needed win after two consecutive losses, a controversial showdown against Adrien Broner and against Yuriorkis Gamboa in his prior outing.

Ponce de Leon, 42-4 (35), entered the Bodega Del Boxeo to an Estrella partisan crowd. Booed throughout the fighter introductions, an unfazed Ponce de Leon boxed carefully in the first round, testing the waters against the heavily-favored Estrella, 15-4-2 (10).

Tasting a few shots from Estrella, Ponce de Leon went to work, throwing his southpaw combinations at a fast-paced clip and landing his vaunted straight left early on. It would be Estrella’s undoing as he was unable to adjust to anything thrown by the “Tarahumara Destroyer” from the second round on.

Estrella was game, landing sporadic right hands which never hurt Ponce de Leon, who quickly got back in his face, throwing punches in bunches and busting up Estrella’s right eye and bruising his left. Estrella would sustain a knockdown from cumulative shots taken in the sixth round.

Estrella was unable to beat the count, with referee Tom Taylor calling the contest off at 1:31 of the sixth round.

Estrella’s highlight of the night came in the second round as a clear tangle of feet made Ponce de Leon fall on his behind, with the Taylor wrongfully calling it a knockdown.

With the win, Ponce de Leon picked up the vacant WBC USNBC featherweight title, hoping to get a long-desired bout against the reigning WBC featherweight champion Jhonny Gonzalez.

All of the judges had Ponce de Leon ahead by scores of 49-46, 48-46 and 48-45 by the time of the stoppage.

In the Golden Boy Promotions/Box Latino/Televisa co-feature, undefeated bantamweight Leo “El Teremoto” Santa Cruz, 19-0-1 (11), scored a TKO over Alejandro Hernandez, 24-9-2 (13), in four.
The taller Santa Cruz used his reach and side-to-side movement to set up well-placed combinations, rattling Hernandez at every turn. Santa Cruz’s body assault and uppercuts were too much to take for Hernandez, who chose to not come out of his corner for the fourth frame as the referee calling off the fight at :18.

Periban Scores Eight-Round Decision

Newly-signed GBP super middleweight prospect, Mexico City’s Marco Antonio Periban, 16-0 (10), defeated a game Jesus Angel Nerio via unanimous decision.

Periban showed good hand speed and heavy hands, although not sitting on his punches. Periban arm-punched quite a bit, with the light-punching Nerio doing the best he could to make Periban look uncomfortable by scoring shots of his own.

Periban played with having a point taken off after landing several low blows throughout the bout.

With the loss, the previously undefeated Nerio saw his record move to 10-1 (4).

In other results, super welterweight Jose Torres, 11-7 (8), scored a second round KO at 1:59 against Javier Gomez.

Super lightweight Mario ’’Popeye” Padilla, scored a left hook knockdown on his first punch against Eduardo Gonzalez en route to engaging in a fun, all-out four-round, inside war with Padilla, 9-4-3 (1), walking away with a 38-38, 40-38 and 40-36 majority decision.

A bloody-nosed Gonzalez saw his record drop to 0-2

Super lightweight switch-hitter Jesus Valadez, 2-2, scored a hard body shot to stop Jorge Amor at 2:49 into the third round.

Super welterweight southpaw Carlos Mendoza, 4-1 (2), KO’ed Gerardo Mendoza, 1-2, with a left hand uppercut at 1:18 of the fourth round of their fight. Mendoza previously tasted the canvas in the third via another wicked uppercut.
