Molina, Perez Stop Foes in Five

By German Villasenor

Super lightweight prospect, Norwalk California’s Carlos Molina, 13-0 (7), looked solid, halting the Filipino southpaw Glen ’’Rapid Fire’’ Gonzales, 8-2-1 (4), at the end of the fifth round on Friday night’s Telefutura-televised main event at the Pico Rivera Sports Arena, Pico Rivera, CA.

Molina looked in very good shape, timing the taller Gonzales, nailing him with straight right hands and sneaky lefts through the first round.

Molina, the aggressor, showed no respect for his opponent, getting in the trenches and landing hard shots on the inside, adding left, short hooks over the top against the Filipino, who seemed unable to mount a sustained, effective attack.

An accidental headbutt opened a bloody, small cut alongside Gonzales’ right eye midway into the third frame.

Gonzales worked the head shots, with Molina ripping body blows in the fourth round. A late right hand by Molina nearly dropped Gonzales, who regained his footing, going to war for the remainder of the round, as Molina controlled the majority of the stanza.

After a furious fifth round, Gonzales shook his head, clearly bothered by the blood. With a big gash on his eyelid, Gonzales told his corner he could not see and continue, with the fight going to the cards.

Molina was declared the KO winner, as the fight went past the four completed rounds.

In the co-featured bout, NABO super featherweight titleholder, Eloy Perez, 18-0-2 (5), moved a step closer to a world title shot by stopping the very tough Derrick Campos, 20-9 (11), in the fifth round of a scheduled eight.

Campos proved no walk-over, pushing forward, making Perez uncomfortable at the very least, trapping and unleashing a series of shots at the end the second which had the favored fighter pinned against the ropes to the bell.

Sneaky with his shots, Perez’ sharper shots would leave Campos with a bruised and rapidly closing eye in the third frame.

In full control by the fourth, the sharp-shooting Perez nailed a tired-looking Campos at near-will, clocking him repeatedly with body shots, uppercuts and left hooks.

Too tough for his own good, Campos got nailed hard toward the end of the round as he stood and traded shots with his foe.

A jarring right and left upstairs put Campos in serious trouble in the fifth. Showing a lot of guts, Campos  hanged tough but got drilled by Perez and pounded from post to post, with referee Jose Cobian doing the right thing and halting the bout at 2:02 of the round.

Martinez Defeats Favela via Split Decision in Four

In a welterweight bout, Anthony Martinez, 5-0 (4), had no easy time against the hardened, iron-chinned veteran Christian Favela, 19-29-6 (10).

Martinez, taken into the fourth round for the first time by the pressuring Favela who landed some free-given head shots, letting everything go at the end of the round.

Scores were 39-37 (twice) for Martinez with the third judge scoring it 39-37 for Favela.
