Greene’s confidence seemed to be growing as he landed a good left/right/left combination in the third that snapped back Martirosyan’s head. Soon, Martirosyan lunged forward with a right connecting with Greene, as his back stretched the top rope.
Greene had his best rounds from the third through the fifth and had Martirosyan’s right eye swelled and nearly closed.
But Martirosyan stayed with his game plan and began landing straight rights with greater frequency and took over the final rounds of the battle, as he had Greene backing up.
In the eighth, a hard right opened a cut over Greene’s right eye and Martirosyan sealed his victory with a questionable knockdown in round ten, clearly a slip combined with a punch to the back of the head. The fight looked a lot closer than most ringside observers thought it would be, however.
Pawel Wolak UD 10 James Moore, junior middleweights
While Pawel Wolak did improve to 27-1 (17), by beating James Moore, 17-3 (10), he did little to strengthen his position in the junior middleweight division. In a fight mostly fought at close quarters, Wolak earned a unanimous decision by scores of 97-93 (twice), and 96-94. Moore, who has now lost three of his last five fights, was visibly tired by the seventh round, but managed to win the eighth round as Wolak also was losing steam. The final two rounds were largely uneventful as the fighters remained close, but Wolak was able to seal his victory as both the ninth and tenth rounds went in his favor.
There had been talk of a solid win propelling Wolak into the title mix among the junior middleweights; however, his performance was not that of a top contender. Any chance Moore had to be relevant in the division may very well be over after this loss.
Juan Gonzalez UD 4 Juan Lucio, lightweights
In the first decision win of his eight-fight career, Juan Gonzalez, 8-0 (7), easily out pointed Juan Lucio by scores of 40-36 by one judge and 39-37 on two cards. For Lucia, it was his first defeat, as his record fell to 4-1-1 (2). Gonzalez was close to putting Lucio down several times in the fight, but the gritty Texan stayed upright to the final bell.
Terry Buterbaugh UD 6 Tommy Rainone, welterweights
Long Island native Rainone suffered an upset loss at the hands of Denver’s Terry Buterbaugh. Rainone tired by the middle of the fight and was seen, at times, eyeing the stadium big screen to check time left in the rounds. Buterbaugh was the aggressor throughout, en route to a four-round unanimous decision to tally his sixth win to three losses and a draw. Rainone dropped to 13-4 with four KOs.
Jorge Diaz TKO 6 Jae Sung Lee, featherweights
After scoring a first-round knockdown, Diaz built a huge point lead for five rounds before a vicious barrage of combinations forced referee Sparkle Lee to stop the contest at 1:54 of round six. Diaz of New Brunswick, NJ, improved to 14-0 (9), as the Korean Lee now stands at 10-3-1 (7).
Abner Cotto UD 6 Edgar Portillo, lightweights
Cotto outpointed a game, but overmatched Portillo. Cotto was most effective in the third and fourth rounds when strong straight rights bloodied Portillo’s left eye. Portillo was able to land punches, but seemed to have no effect on Cotto who is now 8-0 (4), while Portillo suffered his fifth loss, with six wins and a draw.
Christian Martinez TKO 4 Jonathan Cuba, junior welterweights
Martinez, a New York City prospect, dropped Cuba seconds before the bell in the third round, then capitalized in the fourth by dropping Cuba twice in and improving his record to 4-0 (4), while Cuba fell to 2-2 (2).
