IBF champ Spence Jr. stops Ocampo in opening round

Spence vs. Ocampo
Spence vs. Ocampo

By John J. Raspanti

Easy work.

Back in the ring for the first time since stopping former champion Lamont Peterson, IBF welterweight champion Errol “The Truth” Spence stopped challenger Carlos Ocampo in the opening round at the Ford Center at The Star in Frisco, TX. Saturday night.

Spence patiently worked his jab and went to work to the body in the opening stanza. Ocampo landed a right that surprised Spence. He had to come to fight. He had never been floored in his career.

That changed seconds later. Spence (24-0, 21 KOs) pushed Ocampo (22-1, 13 KOs) into the ropes and unloaded a left to the solar plexus that sent Ocampo to his knees. The 22-year-old grimaced in pain. It was obvious he wouldn’t be able to beat the count.

The time was 3:00.

“He reacted to body shots I landed, so I went back down there,” said Spence in the ring. “I wanted to give the crowd their money’s worth. We’ll be back.”
