Once-defeated super lightweight Mauricio “El Maestro” Herrera, 15-1 (7), had no easy night’s work, despite winning a unanimous decision against the tough-as-nails Hector Alatorre on the Thompson Promotions/Fox Sports En Espanol main event on Friday night at the Omega Center in Corona, CA. Herrera displayed his skills, landing sharp body shots, left hooks and uppercuts all night long against the granite-chinned Alatorre, who played some and tried to make a fight of it but ultimately was just too small and under-powered to excel in the 140-pound weight division. Alatorre, who sported a bruised and swollen right eye by the end of the fight, did manage to land some very nice head shots, while avoiding the fire coming back at him with very good movement in the later stages of the fight. Alatorre would go on to lose via 80-72 across the board and see his record dip to 16-11 (5). Rizo stops Lugo with a body shot in one In the co-feature, super lightweight Chris Rizo, 5-0-1 (3), prepared to be in for the long haul against the usually durable Luis Alfredo Lugo, 11-14-1 (5), with a left hand body shot, dropping Lugo in a delayed reaction in the first round.

Unable to get to his feet, Referee David Denkin called the bout off at 1:21. In other results, lightweight Jessie Roman 4-0 (3KOs) defeated Manuel Del Cid, 4-2 (1), via unanimous decision in four. Del Cid lost two points, one in the third and again in the fourth for excessive holding en route to a unanimous 39-35 decision. In a surprise to many, super flyweight Miguel Diaz, 2-0 (1), dropped the quick and skilled Malcolm Franklin, 2-1, three times in the first round, having him in serious trouble from the onset, winning via TKO as referee David Denkin deemed Franklin unable to continue after the third knockdown at 2:52.
Super lightweight Jhon Ortega won his first pro bout by blowing out Akeem Akinbode in the first round of a scheduled four. Akinbode,0-4, was beaten from post to post, finally getting caught in a neutral corner, with referee Ray Corona moving in to stop the battering at :51 seconds into the bout. In the first fight of the night, debuting super lightweight southpaw Emmanuel “Meno” Medina measured his opponent John Dunham, getting into the rhythm and range, going on to stop Dunham, 1-8 (1), with a crushing right hook to the head. Time of the stoppage was 1:57.
The skilled Medina is trainer Clemente Medina’s son, who also trains one Alfredo “El Perro” Angulo.
