Hometown boy Antonio Escalante, 24-2 (15), put a halt to the hardened veteran Edel Ruiz’ winning streak in the third round of the Telefutura “Solo Boxeo” main event on Friday night at the Don Haskins Convention Center, El Paso Texas.

Ruiz, 34-23-4 (25), coming into the fight with four stoppage wins, including a TKO in four over former world champion Clarence “Bones” Adams in his last bout, did well in the first frame, sticking Escalante in spots to outwork his opponent in the first round.

Escalante opened up in the next round, forcing Ruiz back against the ropes in the latter part of the round with shots raining down on the Los Mochis, Sinaloa fighter.

Ruiz hooked hard at the start of the third, trading furiously with the quicker Escalante, who forced Ruiz back in turn, then drove a crushing left body blow to the pit of his opponent, sending him down to a knee.

Ruiz beat the count, just to have his own corner call for the fight to be stopped by the referee at 1:52 of the round.

Escalante currently holds the NABA featherweight title.

Becerra Decisions Dominguez in Six

High-pressure super bantamweight  Alex “El Chamuco” Becerra, 20-8 (9), busted up Francisco Dominguez’ face through six rounds en route to a unanimous 60-53 decision win.

Adding insult to injury, Dominguez, now 7-6 (1), also lost a point for holding in the fourth round.

Local super lightweight Cesar Valenzuela hard to work extra hard in order to move his record to 4-0 by defeating a very game and dangerous Roni Alvarado 3-3 (3).

Valenzuela was sharper and quicker with his shots while Alvarado remained dangerously close to finishing the fight at all times with his heavy hands.

Scores were 38-38, 40-36 and 39-37 giving Valenzuela the majority decision.
