Although Lundy felt it was a premature stoppage, he remains upbeat about his future. He’ll face gut-check time in his career and his chin and power will be questioned- and tested- in future fights. As in all sports, the small mistakes that talent can overcome, at some levels, become fatal errors at the top levels.
Tonight’s show at the Arena in South Philly has shaped up as an outstanding mid-week card. Undefeated Israeli cruiserweight Ran Nakash headlines the show that also features 2008 Olympic gold medalist Felix Diaz and Ukrainian heavyweight Vyacheslav Glazkov, 5-0 (3), making his US debut against the always entertaining Mark “Oak Tree” Brown.
I’ll be at the Arena tonight, so say “Hi” and buy me a beer if you can make it.
Providence, Rhode Island…
Vladine Biosse improved to 7-0 (4) with a hard-fought unanimous decision over “Irish” Joe McCreedy. It was a quite a step up for the former University of Rhode Island footballer, as McCreedy pressed the action throughout the fight.
Biosse is relatively new to boxing and one to keep an eye on going forward.
Fairfax, Virginia…
Jimmy Lange made his return to the George Mason University’s Patriot Center with a second-round TKO over Jimmy LeBlanc. Lange did what he was supposed to do by quickly dispatching LeBlanc who entered the fight 3-15-3 in his previous 21 bouts. After losing round one, Lange dropped LeBlanc seconds into the next stanza with a right to the upper ribs. Following the first knockdown, Lange applied relentless pressure and dropped LeBlanc twice more to earn the victory.
Former junior welterweight champion DeMarcus “Chop Chop” Corley scored an impressive fourth-round TKO over Damian Fuller. The bout started slowly as each man looked to size up the other. After a more active third round, Corley took control in the fourth, landing a solid right hook at the midway point of the round. After reestablishing his right jab, Corley dropped Fuller with a straight left and Fuller was unable to fully recover. Corley stalked him briefly before sending him down once more and earning the stoppage at 2:49 of the fourth.
Corley needed a strong outing after his fifth-round knockout loss to Freddy Hernandez in February. Corley told Maxboxing.com weeks ago that he sees himself still as a contender and not an opponent. He fought like a contender Saturday night.
With a first-round knockout over undersized and overmatched Calvin Faggins, Todd Wilson serves as Exhibit A in Teddy Atlas’ case that it’s not hard take a fighter in the South and get him a 7-0 record. Wilson’s victory improved his record to 8-0 (2).
Middleweight Brandon Quarles won a hard fought debut over a game Vincent Batteast.
Undefeated Juan Rodriguez looked tired and unprepared in a draw against 2-7-2 Dontre King. Rodriguez is now 4-0-1 (4).
Canadian Nathalie Forget scored an upset over local favorite Jennifer Salinas in one of the most exciting fights of the evening. Forget’s majority decision gives her three wins against just one loss while Salinas dropped to 11-2-2 (4).
Zain Shah won an unimpressive decision over John Micheal Terry and Tony Jeter and Lawrence Jones fought to a no-contest after a brutal unintentional headbutt ended the action in the first.
Tuscaloosa, Alabama…
2008 Olympian heavyweight Deontay Wilder improved to 11-0 with 11 knockouts as Dustin Nichols did not answer the bell for the second round. The bronze medalist was recently said to be the most protected fighter among heavyweights by The Ring magazine but still worth keeping an eye on.
Newark, New Jersey…
Alex Perez has a new opponent for Friday night at the Prudential Center; he will now face Brazilian Edvan Dos Santos Barros. Barros is 10-9-1 (7) and has lost six of last seven bouts; however, two of those losses were to Jesus Soto Karass and Luis Collazo.
2008 US Olympian Sadam Ali faces Julias Edmonds, 7-7, in his eighth professional fight and first six-rounder.
Atlantic City, New Jersey…
Mikey Perez has been added to the card at the Tropicana in Atlantic City Saturday night on the undercard of the Tua-Barrett PPV fighting an opponent not yet named.
Welterweight Raymond Serrano’s opponent will be Ayi Bruce, 6-2 (4) of Ghana. Maybe it’s due to the difficulty of finding an opponent but Bruce is definitely a step down for Serrano.
Also added to the card is Star Boxing’s newest fighter, Arlington, Virginia’s Bayan Jargal. Jargal will face James Hope of South Carolina, 6-5 (4). Hardly the opposition you would expect for a 15-0-2 prospect with 10 knockouts.
