Cuellar, Bey and Smith all win at the Hard Rock

On Friday night at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, Las Vegas, NV. there were no surprises when Jesus Cuellar retained his WBA Interim 126 title, Mickey Bey outpointing his Mexican rival while Ishe Smith got back to winning ways in the main event.


In his first fight since losing his WBA 154-pound title last September Ishe Smith (26-6, 12 knockouts) got back to winning ways stopping perennial loser Ryan Dais in two rounds.

Smith 35, jumped on the Davis who was a late sub for Erislandy Lara from the opening bell, in the closing seconds of round two Smith landed a combination that dropped Davis to the canvas where he was counted out at the 2.59 mark.

The win breathed new life into Smith’s career, he’ll now hope for a shot at one of the top guys in the division. Davis lost for the fifth consecutive time drops to 24-14-2(9).

Lightweight fringe contender Mickey Bey outboxed Alan Herrera in the early going before getting dropped late in the seventh round by a left hand. He managed to see the round out and got on the back foot for the eighth before using his skills to pick off Herrera in the closing rounds. Bey ran out the winner by scores of 98-92 (twice) and 97-92.

At the end of the bout Herrera was marked under both eyes pressed Bey for the entire bout but until the knock down his success was limited. Bey moves to 20-1-1(10) while Herrera dips to 32-5-1(21).

In the first fight of the Fox Sports telecast Jesus Cuellar 24-1(18) made a first defense of his WBA Interim featherweight title winning a twelve round unanimous decision over former WBA 122-pound champion Rico Ramos 23-4(12).

Ramos was dropped in the first round by a straight left hand, Cuellar continually pressed Ramos who stayed on the back foot, though he enjoyed some success it wasn’t enough. Cuellar was deducted a point for a rabbit punch in the eighth but won by scores of 117-109, 116-110 and 114-112.

The undercard was stacked with Adrien Broner’s “Band Camp” members, all who won.

Three-time Olympian Rau’see Warren 11-0(3) stayed on track with a ten round points decision over Ricardo Alvarado 7-3(6). Warren scored knock downs in the second and ninth to rubber stamp his victory 99-87 on all three scorecards.

In Lightweight action Robert Easter was extended, winning an eight round decision over Carlos Cardenas20-8-1(13) in a sometimes scrappy bout. Easter 10-0(8) won by scores of 80-72, 79-73 (twice).

Jamal Herring continued his professional progression with a second round TKO victory over Rogelio Casarez, the stoppage came at 2.22 of the round. Herring who fought at the 2012 Olympics is now 8-0(5) while Casarez dips to 6-2(3).

2008 American Olympian reprehensive Raynell Williams went the distance for the first time winning a shut out 40-36 (three times) over Joshua Arocho 3-9-4(2). Williams now 25, fighting at lightweight advanced to 4-0(3).

The first fight of the night saw Welterweight Javonte Clark 2-0(2) walk through Miguel Rico 2-6-1(0) in 25 seconds of the opening round.

Several prominent boxers were in attendance including Bernard Hopkins, Danny Garcia, Shawn Porter, Gilberto Ramirez, David Haye, Adrien Broner, Anthony Ogogo, Lamont and Anthony Peterson.
