Cuello, whose only other previous outing in Mexico came last year against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (lost by UD), made his way out of the round, going on to backpedal with Alvarez in hot pursuit. The lack of power from Cuello made everything fall in place for the Mexican who made a bloody mess out of his opponent’s face.
With blood gushing from his nose, Cuello kept trying to avoid his attacker’s assault through the next couple of rounds, occasionally flicking punches just to stay in the fight.
Cuello went down once more in the fifth round, via a savage attack, beating the referee’s count. He would be lucky not to have the fight stopped as he took a knee on a couple of occasions thereafter to gather himself.
Seemingly, Cuello had no intention of fighting back and stayed on the receiving end of thudding body shots. The referee saw fit to stop the battering in the sixth round with the packed arena going nuts.
With the loss, Cuello’s record dropped to 26-2 with 12 KOs, marking the first time he would lose via stoppage. Alvarez, promoted by Oscar De La Hoya’s (present and doing the Televisa broadcast commentary) Golden Boy Promotions, kept himself in line for a title shot, winning a so-called ’’Silver’’ version of the WBC light middleweight title.
