Ask Gerry Cooney – September 12th, 2014

Compiled by Allan Scotto

Hey, fans! Welcome to “Ask Gerry Cooney,” where you get to ask former heavyweight contender “Gentleman” Gerry Cooney any boxing-related question you’d like. Your questions for Gerry’s review will be featured at Maxboxing.com every week.

Each week, Gerry will answer as many of your questions as he can on the Sirius XM radio show “Friday Night at The Fights,” which Gerry co-hosts with Randy “The Commish” Gordon, former Chairman of the New York State Athletic Commission.

The show airs every Friday on Sirius Sport Zone Channel 92 from 6-8 p.m., Eastern Standard Time.

Please submit your questions to: askgerrycooney@aol.com.

Our first question comes from Tony S. who asks:

Gerry, when Bernard Hopkins steps in the ring on November 8th to face Sergey Kovalev he will be just shy of his 50th birthday. Do you know if there has ever been a Champion that fought into his 50’s as a champion?

Our next question comes from Gene R. who asks:

Gerry, here’s a hypothetical for you. Should Chris Algeiri pull another rabbit out of his hat and beat Manny Pacquiao, how do you think he would fare against Floyd Mayweather? Could Algeiri possibly be the guy who comes out of nowhere and dethrones both Manny and Floyd?

And Gerry answered the following questions last week:

Our first question came from Kenny B. who asked:

Gerry, we’ve got Adrienne Broner fighting Emmanuel Taylor and Canelo Alvarez fighting Joshua Clottey. These both seem like major mismatches to me that aren’t not even worth watching. How do you feel about these matchups?

Gerry stated that he thought Taylor might give Broner a run for his money, which he did, but did not feel that Clottey would be much of a match-up against Alvarez.

Our next question came from John r. who asked:

Gerry, lots of talk about Bob Arum saying that we might see two fights between Mayweather and Pacquiao in 2015. Don’t you think he’s prematurely looking past Maidana and Algieri?

Gerry said that he is over the whole Mayweather / Pacquiao super fight and that he no longer has any interest.
