Ask Gerry Cooney – October 27, 2015

Compiled by Allan Scotto

Hey, fans! Welcome to “Ask Gerry Cooney,” where you get to ask former heavyweight contender “Gentleman” Gerry Cooney any boxing-related question you’d like. Your questions for Gerry’s review will be featured at every week.

Each week, Gerry will answer as many of your questions as he can on the Sirius XM radio show “Friday Night at The Fights,” which Gerry co-hosts with Randy “The Commish” Gordon, former Chairman of the New York State Athletic Commission.

The show airs every Friday on Sirius / XM Rush Zone Channel 93 from 6-8 p.m., Eastern Standard Time.

Please submit your questions to:

Our first question comes from Art F. who asks:

Hi Gerry, my question is about Davis Lemieux. I felt that he was completely controlled by Golovkin’s jab. Shouldn’t a fighter of that caliber be able to adjust to that and find a way to get inside toneutralize that jab instead of just allowing himself to be hit?

Our next question comes from Oscar I. who asks:

Hi Gerry, I’m a long time listener of the show and I’m interested to know how you see the upcoming bout between Miguel Cotto and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. I think

it goes into the later rounds with the younger Alvarez eventually establishing control and taking Cotto out. Do you agree?

And Gerry answered the following questions on last week’s show.

Our first question came from Carlos J. who asked:

Gerry, I was a big fan of The Contender series and I’ve watched the careers of Sergio Mora, Peter Manfredo, K-9 Bundrage and some of the other fighters featured on the show. It seems to me that they were only able to go so far and then failed. Is it because they were inferior to elite fighters?

Gerry feels that the Contender series featured “B” fighters for the most part and that due to their participation in the show, some were given title shots, etc. He feels that they fail because they are not at that level to begin with.

Our next question came from Jason F. who asked:

Gerry, I was really surprised to see Devon Alexander lose to Aron Martinez. I thought for sure he would have no problem with Martinez. So, in your opinion, based on what you saw, is Alexander finished?

Gerry thinks that Alexander has to truly commit himself to training to be able to be competitive, but he also feels that Alexander has a long road back after that loss.
