Ask Gerry Cooney – Oct. 11, 2013

Compiled by Allan Scotto

Hey, fans! Welcome to “Ask Gerry Cooney,” where you get to ask former heavyweight contender “Gentleman” Gerry Cooney any boxing-related question you’d like. Your questions for Gerry’s review will be featured at Maxboxing.com every Thursday morning (or in this case, Friday morning).

Each week, Gerry will answer as many of your questions as he can on the Sirius XM radio show “Friday Night at The Fights,” a show Gerry co-hosts with Randy “The Commish” Gordon, former Chairman of the New York State Athletic Commission.

The show airs every Friday on Sirius channel 92 and XM channel 208 from 6 – 8 p.m., Eastern Standard Time.

Please submit your questions to: askgerrycooney@aol.com.

Our first question comes from Jon O., who asks:

Gerry, I listened to the very spirited discussion you, Randy and Allan had last week on whether judges are corrupted in boxing. My question is, since judging a fight is so subjective, how would one ever go about regulating such a thing?

Our next question comes from Henry T., who asks:

Gerry, assuming that Manny Pacquiao gets past Brandon Rios, do you think the Floyd Mayweather-Pacquiao showdown will finally happen and do you think anyone still cares?

Gerry answered the following questions on last week’s show:

Our first question came from Louie R., who asked:

Gerry, I hear that Floyd Mayweather will be fighting Amir Khan in May. I don’t think Khan stands a chance against him. How do you see that one going?

Gerry thinks that although it may be a spirited fight for a few rounds, Mayweather will eventually take over and end the night at 46-0.

Our next question came from Paul K., who asked:

Gerry, what drew you to boxing as the sport you chose to compete in?

Gerry very candidly confided that he had come from an alcoholic home with an abusive father and boxing was his way out. He also liked seeing himself on the back page of Newsday for winning the Golden Gloves.
