Ask Gerry Cooney – November 16th, 2015

Compiled by Allan Scotto

Hey, fans! Welcome to “Ask Gerry Cooney,” where you get to ask former heavyweight contender “Gentleman” Gerry Cooney any boxing-related question you’d like. Your questions for Gerry’s review will be featured at every week.

Each week, Gerry will answer as many of your questions as he can on the Sirius XM radio show “Friday Night at The Fights,” which Gerry co-hosts with Randy “The Commish” Gordon, former Chairman of the New York State Athletic Commission.

The show airs every Friday on Sirius / XM Rush Zone Channel 93 from 6-8 p.m., Eastern Standard Time.

Please submit your questions to:

Our first question comes from Tony S. who asks:

Gerry, I’ve recently seen some comments about Gennady Golovkin attributed to Floyd Mayweather. Do you think Mayweather may be testing the water to come out of retirement to face GGG at a catch weight?

Our next question comes from Al G. who asks:

Gerry, I watched the fight between Bradley and Rios and when Rios announced his retirement, I was curious about something. What happens to fighters who retire without enough money to carry them through the rest of their lives? Are there retirement plans in place for them, or some sort of training to help them move beyond boxing?

And Gerry answered the following questions on last week’s show.

Our first question came from Patrick K. who asked:

Gerry, the latest news is that Andre Ward pulled out of his fight with Alexander Brand because of swelling on his right knee. My question is, do you buy it or is it just Ward being Ward again?

Actually, Gerry and Randy interviewed Dr. Bennett Brown, who explained that the knee injury is more than likely a slight tear to the meniscus and that it should heal quickly.

Our next question came from Steve R. who asked:

Gerry, I’ve been seeing a lot of talk about Manny Pacquiao fighting Amir Khan. Do you think they will fight and if so, who do you think will win this fight, at this stage of their careers?

Gerry thinks that may be a fight that is very possible and sees it as a back and forth affair and it could go either way.
