Ask Gerry Cooney – May 3, 2013

Compiled by Allan Scotto

Hey, fans! Welcome to “Ask Gerry Cooney,” where you get to ask former heavyweight contender “Gentleman” Gerry Cooney any boxing-related question you’d like. Your questions for Gerry’s review will be featured at every Thursday morning (or Friday morning, in this case!).
Each week, Gerry will answer as many of your questions as he can on the Sirius XM radio show “Friday Night at The Fights,” a show Gerry co-hosts with Randy “The Commish” Gordon, former Chairman of the New York State Athletic Commission.
The show airs every Friday on Sirius channel 92 and XM channel 208 from 6 – 8 p.m., Eastern Standard Time.

Please submit your questions to:
Our first question comes from Vinny S., who asks:
Gerry, last week in the Danny Garcia-Zab Judah fight, I thought I saw a much tougher Zab than in the past. Usually, in my opinion, when Zab gets in trouble, he looks for a way out of the fight but last week when he was hurt, he came on stronger and given a few more rounds, I think he probably would have won. Do you agree?
Our next question comes from Warren M., who asks:
Gerry, I thought that Martin Murray clearly beat Sergio Martinez last week and yet once again, the scoring by the judges is suspect in my opinion. Can you tell me how you saw that fight and whether you feel that Martinez did win?
Gerry answered the following questions on last week’s show:
Our first question came from Tommy G., who asked:
Gerry, this weekend is the showdown between Zab Judah and Danny Garcia. How do you see this fight going and who do you think will win?
Gerry felt Judah had the edge in experience and Garcia had the edge in strength and it could have gone either way.
Our next question came from Bernie Campbell, who asked:
Gerry, why do you think that Jack Dempsey did not defend his title that often? Did youever met him or hang out in his bar and do you have any stories you can share?
Gerry pointed out a fact that very few people know and that is Dempsey did not like to fight African-American fighters. That is one of the main reasons Dempsey had long stretches of inactivity.
