Ask Gerry Cooney- July 12, 2012

Compiled by Allan Scotto

Hey, fans! Welcome to “Ask Gerry Cooney,” where you get to ask former heavyweight contender “Gentleman” Gerry Cooney any boxing-related question you’d like. Your questions for Gerry’s review will be featured at every Thursday morning.

Each week, Gerry will answer as many of your questions as he can on the Sirius/XM radio show, “Friday Night at The Fights,” a show that Gerry co-hosts with Randy “The Commish” Gordon, the former Chairman of the New York State Athletic Commission.
The show airs every Friday on Sirius channel 94 and XM channel 208 from 7 – 9 p.m., Eastern Standard Time.
Please submit your questions to
Our first question this week comes from Tony T., who asks:
Hey Champ, long time listener.  I notice that two names are being kicked around as the next opponent for Saul Alvarez, Ricardo Mayorga and Josesito Lopez.  Who would you like to see in the ring with Alvarez and why?
Our next question comes from Frank C., who asks:
Gerry, we’re finally going to get to see [Julio Cesar] Chavez Jr. against Sergio Martinez.  I think Chavez beats him soundly, what do you think?
Gerry answered the following questions on the air last Friday.
Our first question this week came from Ronald F., who asked:
Gerry, Saturday night Cornelius “K-9” Bundrage blew out Cory Spinks.  In my opinion, Spinks is a masterful boxer, but he has no power to keep a guy like Bundrage off.  Now, people are talking about Bundrage facing Saul Alvarez.  Do you think Bundrage is ready for “Canelo” Alvarez?
Gerry felt Bundrage looked good against Spinks but did not feel that “K9” could beat Alvarez at this point. Randy was not impressed with Bundrage at all and felt he got away with a lot of pulling Spinks’ head into his right hands.
Our next question came from Mike D., who asked:
Hi Gerry, my question is this.  By losing to Tim Bradley in that infamous decision, how much does that affect Manny Pacquiao’s future paydays?
Gerry’s opinion is the controversial decision could definitely impact Pacquiao’s future paydays, especially against Floyd Mayweather, who will probably ask for even more of a percentage of the purse should they fight.
