Ask Gerry Cooney – December 18th, 2014

Compiled by Allan Scotto

Hey, fans! Welcome to “Ask Gerry Cooney,” where you get to ask former heavyweight contender “Gentleman” Gerry Cooney any boxing-related question you’d like. Your questions for Gerry’s review will be featured at every week.

Each week, Gerry will answer as many of your questions as he can on the Sirius XM radio show “Friday Night at The Fights,” which Gerry co-hosts with Randy “The Commish” Gordon, former Chairman of the New York State Athletic Commission.

The show airs every Friday on Sirius Sport Zone Channel 92 from 6-8 p.m., Eastern Standard Time.

Please submit your questions to:

Our first question comes from John F. who asks:

It was recently announced that Bermane Stiverne and Deontay Wilder will be squaring up with the WBC Heavyweight title on the line. Gerry, how do you see this one going?

Our next question comes from Kenny D. who asks:

Gerry, supposedly an unnamed judge in Las Vegas has accused Floyd Mayweather of paying millions of dollars to judges to rule in favor of Mayweather in many of his fights. An investigation is said to be underway. Do you think it’s possible for any of this to be true?

And Gerry answered the following questions last week:

Our first question came from Alphonso P. who asked:

Hi Gerry, this weekend Victor Ortiz gets back in the ring with Manuel Perez, a man with only 4 knockouts in his entire career. Do you see this as a competitive fight for Ortiz or is it a fight meant to try and rebuild his confidence?

Gerry felt that this would be an easy comeback fight for Ortiz and that he would win easily, which he did by 3rd round KO. And Gerry also stated that whether Ortiz will be able to join the ranks of the elite fighters again will not be decided by a fight like this.

Our next question comes from Roberto B. who asks:

Gerry, Hopkins lost his last fight soundly and he looked like he’s lost a step or two. Do you think he can rebound from this and be a champion again?

Gerry agrees that Bernard definitely lost a step or two and points out that he will be 50 years old if he takes another fight. Gerry feels that Bernard has been a great Champion, but it’s probably time to call it a career.
