Ask Gerry Cooney – December 13th, 2014

Compiled by Allan Scotto

Hey, fans! Welcome to “Ask Gerry Cooney,” where you get to ask former heavyweight contender “Gentleman” Gerry Cooney any boxing-related question you’d like. Your questions for Gerry’s review will be featured at Maxboxing.com every week.

Each week, Gerry will answer as many of your questions as he can on the Sirius XM radio show “Friday Night at The Fights,” which Gerry co-hosts with Randy “The Commish” Gordon, former Chairman of the New York State Athletic Commission.

The show airs every Friday on Sirius Sport Zone Channel 92 from 6-8 p.m., Eastern Standard Time.

Please submit your questions to: askgerrycooney@aol.com

Our first question comes from Alphonso P. who asks:

Hi Gerry, this weekend Victor Ortiz gets back in the ring with Manuel Perez, a man with only 4 knockouts in his entire career. Do you see this as a competitive fight for Ortiz or is it a fight meant to try and rebuild his confidence?

Our next question comes from Roberto B. who asks:

Gerry, Hopkins lost his last fight soundly and he looked like he’s lost a step or two. Do you think he can rebound from this and be a champion again? Also, regarding Pacman vs Mayweather, people are getting tired of Floyd not fighting the best opposition. Do you think the fight will ever happen? Why or why not?

And Gerry answered the following questions last week:

Our first question came from Tony G. who asked:

Gerry, as I was watching the Algieri / Pacqiaou fight I noticed two things about Algieri. One he seems to have a pretty good left hook to the body and two, he doesn’t seem to have much power. Everyone knows that you had probably the best left hook to the body ever, so have you ever considered working with Algieri to teach him how to land that and other punches with the kind of power he needs?

Gerry said that he and Algieri have spoken about possibly working together but nothing definitive has developed.

Our next question came from Rocco D. who asked:

Gerry, this week Erislandy Lara is taking on Ishe Smith. How much of a chance do you think Smith has against Lara?

Gerry does not think that Smith will fare well against Lara.
