Ask Gerry Cooney – August 8, 2014

Compiled by Allan Scotto

Hey, fans! Welcome to “Ask Gerry Cooney,” where you get to ask former heavyweight contender “Gentleman” Gerry Cooney any boxing-related question you’d like. Your questions for Gerry’s review will be featured at every week.

Each week, Gerry will answer as many of your questions as he can on the Sirius XM radio show “Friday Night at The Fights,” which Gerry co-hosts with Randy “The Commish” Gordon, former Chairman of the New York State Athletic Commission.

The show airs every Friday on Sirius Sport Zone Channel 92 from 6-8 p.m., Eastern Standard Time.

Please submit your questions to:

Our first question comes from Tom G. who asks:

Gerry, how do you see the upcoming fight between Sergey Kovalev and Bernard Hopkins going? Does father time catch up to “the alien,” or does Bernard teach the youngin’ a lesson?

Our next question comes from Gary B. who asks:

Hi Gerry. Just wondering how much of a chance you think Kell Brook has against Shawn Porter?

And Gerry answered the following questions last week:

Our first question comes from Frankie M. who asks:

Gerry, I’ve been reading that the Golovkin / Geale fight flopped as far as numbers are concerned. If that’s true, how does that affect his chances of moving into a PPV situation?

Gerry feels that every fighter wants to maximize their earning potential and that when a fight doesn’t do well in the ratings it lowers what the networks are willing to pay for that fighter in the future.

Our next question comes from Tony S. who asks:

Gerry, Shannon Briggs is chasing Vladimir Klitscho non-stop in his quest to get him in the ring. Do you think that Briggs actually has a shot against Vladimir if Vladimir were to fight him?

Gerry feels that Briggs is trying to position himself for a big payday against Klitscho much the way David Haye did.
