Ask Gerry Cooney – August 2, 2013

Compiled by Allan Scotto

Hey, fans! Welcome to “Ask Gerry Cooney,” where you get to ask former heavyweight contender “Gentleman” Gerry Cooney any boxing-related question you’d like. Your questions for Gerry’s review will be featured at every Thursday morning (or Friday morning, in this case!).
Each week, Gerry will answer as many of your questions as he can on the Sirius XM radio show “Friday Night at The Fights,” a show Gerry co-hosts with Randy “The Commish” Gordon, former Chairman of the New York State Athletic Commission.
The show airs every Friday on Sirius channel 92 and XM channel 208 from 6 – 8 p.m., Eastern Standard Time.

Please submit your questions to:
Our first question comes from Ken D., who asks:
Gerry, I remember watching the Emile Griffith-Benny “Kid” Paret fight on the old “Friday Night at the Fights” with my dad. It more or less ended boxing for years until Muhammad Ali came along. Do you have any memories of Emile Griffith?
Our next question comes from Jimmy G., who asks:
Hi, Gerry; love the show! I was at the Paramount in your old stomping grounds in Huntington, Long Island for the [Chris] Algieri-[Mike] Arnaoutis fight and I have to say, Algieri looked great! Does beating a guy like Arnaoutis move Algieri into contention?
Gerry answered the following questions on last week’s show.
Our first
question came from Arturo in the 619, who asked:
This past weekend, John Molina showed us and Mickey Bey why boxing is unlike any other sport in the world by being hopelessly behind on the cards and then hitting the ninth inning homerun. It reminded me of some of the great boxing comebacks where fighters snatched victory from the jaws of defeat such as Mike Weaver vs. John Tate, George Foreman vs. Michael Moorer and Julio Cesar
Chavez vs. Meldrick Taylor. Commish, what is your all time favorite boxing comeback? And by the way, I love the show!
Boy, this kicked off quite a few minutes of memories, Bobby Chacon vs. Cornelius Boza-Edwards and many others but the Granddaddy of them all was thought to be Muhammad Ali vs. George Foreman.
Our next question came from Chris S., who asked:
Why do you think it is that boxing has not ever been able to put a National Boxing Commission together with one set of rules and regulations that are the same, countrywide?
Gerry does not feel that the government should be involved at all in governing the sport of boxing, but rather the Commissions in each State should work together to form one set of rules for everyone.
