Ask Gerry Cooney – August 1, 2014

Compiled by Allan Scotto

Hey, fans! Welcome to “Ask Gerry Cooney,” where you get to ask former heavyweight contender “Gentleman” Gerry Cooney any boxing-related question you’d like. Your questions for Gerry’s review will be featured at every week.

Each week, Gerry will answer as many of your questions as he can on the Sirius XM radio show “Friday Night at The Fights,” which Gerry co-hosts with Randy “The Commish” Gordon, former Chairman of the New York State Athletic Commission.

The show airs every Friday on Sirius Sport Zone Channel 92 from 6-8 p.m., Eastern Standard Time.

Please submit your questions to:

Our first question comes from Frankie M. who asks:

Gerry, I’ve been reading that the Golovkin / Geale fight flopped as far as numbers are concerned. If that’s true, how does that affect his chances of moving into a PPV situation?

Our next question comes from Tony S. who asks:

Gerry, Shannon Briggs is chasing Vladimir Klitscho non-stop in his quest to get him in the ring. Do you think that Briggs actually has a shot against Vladimir if Vladimir were to fight him?

And Gerry answered the following questions last week:

Our first question comes from Harry S. who asks:

Gerry, I listened very intently to the two interviews you and Randy conducted with Shelly “Shellito’s Way” Vincent and Heather Hardy. It seems as though Vincent is trying to get Hardy in the ring, but so far, no bite from Hardy. I enjoy women’s boxing, but notice there are not a lot of female fighters. Do you think it will ever enjoy the same popularity as men’s boxing?

Gerry pointed out that when there is a female bout at a boxing card they are usually very exciting with a lot of action. But, he does not think it will achieve the same popularity as male boxing primarily due to a lack of participation.

Our next question comes from Sean S. who asks:

Gerry, looks like next up for Canelo Alvarez is James Kirkland. Kirkland brings a lot of power into the ring, so how do you see this fight going?

Gerry likes this match-up and things it could go either way.
