Hey, fans! Welcome to “Ask Gerry Cooney,” where you get to ask former heavyweight contender “Gentleman” Gerry Cooney any boxing-related question you’d like. Your questions for Gerry’s review will be featured at Maxboxing.com every Thursday morning.
Each week, Gerry will answer as many of your questions as he can on the SiriusXM radio show, “Friday Night at The Fights,” a show that Gerry co-hosts with Randy “The Commish” Gordon, the former Chairman of the New York State Athletic Commission.
The show airs every Friday on Sirius channel 94 and XM channel 208 from 7 – 9 p.m., Eastern Standard Time.
Our first question this week comes from Marc S., who asks:
Gerry, the IBF, having cleared Lamont Peterson of using PED’s, has ordered him to defend against Zab Judah, who always seems to fail in his really big fights. Do you think Judah beats him?
Our next question comes from Billy T., who asks:
Gerry, in a hypothetical, who do you think would win in a fight between Sugar Ray Leonard and Floyd Mayweather?
Gerry answered the following questions on the air last Friday.
Our first question came from Sammy V., who asked:
Gerry, pretty soon Chad Dawson will be facing Andre Ward at 168 pounds. I think Ward will prove to be too much for Dawson. What do you think?
Gerry thinks both men are very good fighters and that it could go either way. He does give props to Andre Ward for taking a difficult fight for his first consensus title defense.
Our next question came from David R., who asked:
Many people are saying that the amateur boxing program in the United States is all but over. Do you think that’s true?
Gerry and Randy both think that a lot of work needs to be done to bring respectability back to the amateur program.
