Ask Gerry Cooney – April 4, 2013

Compiled by Allan Scotto

Hey, fans! Welcome to “Ask Gerry Cooney,” where you get to ask former heavyweight contender “Gentleman” Gerry Cooney any boxing-related question you’d like. Your questions for Gerry’s review will be featured at every Thursday morning.

Each week, Gerry will answer as many of your questions as he can on the Sirius XM radio show “Friday Night at The Fights,” a show Gerry co-hosts with Randy “The Commish” Gordon, former Chairman of the New York State Athletic Commission.
The show airs every Friday on Sirius channel 92 and XM channel 208 from 6 – 8 p.m., Eastern Standard Time.
Please submit your questions to:
Our first question comes from Johnny H, who asks:
Gerry, I’m a big fight fan, who fought a couple of neighborhood kid fights but never boxed. Watching Brandon Rios and Mike Alvarado trading hard shots off each others heads, I wondered how someone can take continual shots like that. Is that conditioning or is it something you either have or don’t have?
Our next question comes from Bob D, who asks:
Gerry, Robert Guerrero was recently arrested for trying to bring a licensed gun onto a plane. My question is: Guerrero is about to fight the biggest fight of his career when he faces Floyd Mayweather Jr. Even if the gun charge gets resolved easily, do you think that will shake his concentration?
Gerry answered the following questions on last week’s show.
Our first question came from Al G., who asked:
Gerry, hypothetically, if Saul Alvarez were to fight Floyd Mayweather, I see it as Mayweather’s boxing skills against Alvarez’s brute force and strength. So in that situation, which style wins?
Gerry feels Alvarez is coming along nicely but also believes Floyd’s boxing skills would win the day.
Our next question came from Tommy V., who asked:
Gerry, Adrien Broner is set to face Paulie Malignaggi. Although Malignaggi has great boxing skill, he doesn’t seem to have much behind his punches, where Broner does. So if Broner begins to walk through Malignaggi’s punches, what would Paulie need to do to win?
Gerry acknowledged that Paulie is a fantastic boxer but Broner would be able to counter Paulie’s ability with his power. Gerry also feels it’s a risky fight for Malignaggi.
