Ask Gerry Cooney - May 30, 2014

Compiled by Allan Scotto

Hey, fans! Welcome to “Ask Gerry Cooney,” where you get to ask former heavyweight contender “Gentleman” Gerry Cooney any boxing-related question you’d like. Your questions for Gerry’s review will be featured at every week.

Each week, Gerry will answer as many of your questions as he can on the Sirius XM radio show “Friday Night at The Fights,” which Gerry co-hosts with Randy “The Commish” Gordon, former Chairman of the New York State Athletic Commission.
The show airs every Friday on Sirius Sport Zone Channel 92 from 6-8 p.m., Eastern Standard Time.
Please submit your questions to:
Our first question comes from Lou M., who asks:
Gerry, This past week, Rocky Juarez defeated Rene Alvarado for the WBC Silver featherweight belt. Where do you think that puts Juarez in the big picture of the featherweight division?
Our next question comes from Richie C., who asks:
Gerry, this Saturday, Nonito Donaire faces WBA featherweight titleholder Simpiwe Vetyeka in China. I did not think Donaire looked good at all in his last couple of fights and I’m wondering how you see this one.
Gerry answered the following questions on last week’s show:
Our first question came from Bobby L., who asked:
Gerry, Floyd Mayweather is fighting again on September. Do you think he should fight Amir Khan or should he give a rematch to Marcos Maidana?
Gerry thought Maidana gave Mayweather a good fight and wouldn’t mind seeing it again. He also feels that Mayweather vs. Amir Khan would be a good one, so either fight is OK with him.
Our next question came from Charlie B., who asked:
Gerry, why do you think boxing is not a high school or college sport? Aren’t football, lacrosse, wrestling and other contact sports just as dangerous?
Gerry feels that insurance costs would be prohibitive because the other sports mentioned are not designed to cause injury where boxing is.
