Ask Gerry Cooney - March 21, 2014

Compiled by Allan Scotto

Hey, fans! Welcome to “Ask Gerry Cooney,” where you get to ask former heavyweight contender “Gentleman” Gerry Cooney any boxing-related question you’d like. Your questions for Gerry’s review will be featured at every Thursday morning (or in this case, Friday).

Each week, Gerry will answer as many of your questions as he can on the Sirius XM radio show “Friday Night at The Fights,” a show Gerry co-hosts with Randy “The Commish” Gordon, former Chairman of the New York State Athletic Commission.
The show airs every Friday on Sirius Sport Zone Channel 92 from 6-8 p.m., Eastern Standard Time.
Please submit your questions to:
Our first question comes from Vinny G., who asks:
Gerry I’m curious as to how you see the upcoming fight between Shawn Porter and Paulie Malignaggi? Paulie is a great boxer but I don’t believe he has the power to keep Porter off him.  What do you think?
Our next question comes from Jimmy E., who asks:
Gerry, during your fight with Larry Holmes, you were penalized three points for low blows that were actually caused by Larry pushing your head down. I know that fight didn’t go to the scorecards but in a situation like that where the fight isn’t stopped, can the fighter’s management dispute those deductions and if proven right, is the decision changed?
Gerry answered the following questions on last week’s show:
Our first question came from Kent, who asked:
Hi Gerry, I am your biggest fan and I was wondering, in your fight with Michael Spinks, there were only 10 seconds left in round five when the ref [Frank Cappuccino] stopped it.  Had you been allowed to finish the round, do you think you could have turned it around or was it simply just not your night?
Gerry laughed and said he’s ready to take on Spinks right now but was very candid in explaining that he was drinking heavily back then and really didn’t train as he should have.
Our next question came from George B., who asked:
Gerry, I’m sure you’ve heard the rumors that Floyd Mayweather had some people break the arms and legs of a couple of contractors whom he thought stole jewelry from him. If true, he could face charges of attempted murder, kidnapping and menacing. I‘d like to know if you have any inside info as to whether or not this actually happened and if it did, why on Earth do you think he would throw away his life that way?
Gerry and Randy both pointed out that there is absolutely no verification of this story.
