Ask Gerry Cooney - June 28, 2013

Compiled by Allan Scotto

Hey, fans! Welcome to “Ask Gerry Cooney,” where you get to ask former heavyweight contender “Gentleman” Gerry Cooney any boxing-related question you’d like. Your questions for Gerry’s review will be featured at Maxboxing.com every Thursday morning (or Friday morning, in this case!).

Each week, Gerry will answer as many of your questions as he can on the Sirius XM radio show “Friday Night at The Fights,” a show Gerry co-hosts with Randy “The Commish” Gordon, former Chairman of the New York State Athletic Commission.

The show airs every Friday on Sirius channel 92 and XM channel 208 from 6 – 8 p.m., Eastern Standard Time.

Please submit your questions to: askgerrycooney@aol.com.

Our first question comes from Warren M., who asks:

Gerry, I keep hearing fighters thanking or talking about Al Haymon. Who is he and why does he seem to have such a tremendous influence on the sport of boxing?

Our next question comes from Jimmy E., who asks:

Hey, Gerry and Randy!  Longtime listener and big fan of the show! I have friends that argue that the ratings of The Ring magazine are the most accurate but The Ring magazine is owned by Oscar De la Hoya, who also owns Golden Boy. I can’t see those ratings as unbiased. Am I wrong?

Gerry answered the following questions on last week’s show…

Our first question came from Vincent T., who asked:

Gerry, this week we lost James Gandolfini. He was a great actor and I understand he was a big fight fan. Did you know him and if so, can you share some of your memories with us?

Gerry shared that he met James at some fights and that he was a wonderful, kind man.

Our next question came from Bernie Campbell, who asked:

Gerry, after a stellar amateur career, why did it take Gennady Golovkin so long to turn pro?

The discussion on the show explained that, all too often, fighters from countries that were part of the Soviet Union are often in the military or in law enforcement and that in order to turn pro, they run the risk of losing that duty.
