Ask Gerry Cooney - July 26, 2014

Compiled by Allan Scotto

Hey, fans! Welcome to “Ask Gerry Cooney,” where you get to ask former heavyweight contender “Gentleman” Gerry Cooney any boxing-related question you’d like. Your questions for Gerry’s review will be featured at every week.

Each week, Gerry will answer as many of your questions as he can on the Sirius XM radio show “Friday Night at The Fights,” which Gerry co-hosts with Randy “The Commish” Gordon, former Chairman of the New York State Athletic Commission.

The show airs every Friday on Sirius Sport Zone Channel 92 from 6-8 p.m., Eastern Standard Time.

Please submit your questions to:

Our first question comes from Harry S. who asks:

Gerry, I listened very intently to the two interviews you and Randy conducted with Shelly “Shellito’s Way” Vincent and Heather Hardy. It seems as though Vincent is trying to get Hardy in the ring, but so far, no bite from Hardy. I enjoy women’s boxing, but notice there are not a lot of female fighters. Do you think it will ever enjoy the same popularity as men’s boxing?

Our next question comes from Sean S. who asks:

Gerry, looks like next up for Canelo Alvarez is James Kirkland. Kirkland brings a lot of power into the ring, so how do you see this fight going?

And Gerry answered the following questions last week:

Our first question came from Kevin M. who asked:

Gerry, it’s official that Mayweather will fight Maidana again. How do you see the rematch going?

Gerry thinks it should be an interesting fight similar to the first one with Maidana pressing and Mayweather using the ring to keep him off. He also feels that Mayweather will bring to the ring a knowledge of how maidana fights and will capitalize on that.

Our next question came from Ritchie P. who asked:

I thought Lara beat Alvarez, but I’ve noticed that certain judges just don’t seem to give credit to slick boxers. Why do you think that is?

Gerry feels it is harder in some instances for judges to see ring generalship and slick boxing skills when a boxer is fighting a hard punching very aggressive brawler.
