Ask Gerry Cooney - April 26, 2014

Compiled by Allan Scotto

Hey, fans! Welcome to “Ask Gerry Cooney,” where you get to ask former heavyweight contender “Gentleman” Gerry Cooney any boxing-related question you’d like. Your questions for Gerry’s review will be featured at every Thursday morning (or in this case, a special Saturday edition!).

Each week, Gerry will answer as many of your questions as he can on the Sirius XM radio show “Friday Night at The Fights,” which Gerry co-hosts with Randy “The Commish” Gordon, former Chairman of the New York State Athletic Commission.
The show airs every Friday on Sirius Sport Zone Channel 92 from 6-8 p.m., Eastern Standard Time.
Please submit your questions to:
Our first question comes from Bobby L., who asks:
Gerry, how long do you think Bernard Hopkins can go on fighting? He’s going on 50 and still looks damn good in my opinion. What do you think?
Our next question comes from Teddy B., who asks:
Gerry, do you think it would cut down on injuries if professional fighters were to wear headgear like the amateurs do?
Gerry answered the following questions on last week’s show:
Our first question came from Tony T., who asked:
Gerry, I looked at the press conference pics of Chris Algieri and Ruslan Provodnikov and Algieri looks to me to be a much bigger man. I think if Algieri boxes and throws his normal very high punch output, he’s got a good shot at beating Provodnikov. What do you think?
Gerry also sees a huge size advantage for Algieri but pointed out that Provodnikov is a brawler and feels the big challenge for Algieri is to find a way to keep the Russian off.
Our next question came from Ricky M., who asked:
Gerry, on May 3rd, Floyd Mayweather takes on Marcos Maidana. Maidana certainly made short work of Adrien Broner, so how do you think he’ll do against Mayweather?
Gerry pointed out that Broner is not Mayweather and he feels Maidana will have a lot more trouble with Floyd than he did with Broner.
