Like father like son: Tim Tszyu to fight Zab Judah?

Tim Tszyu is looking to become the second member of his family to knockout Zab Judah if a fight with the American veteran can be made.

Tszyu’s father Kostya Tszyu famously knocked out the brash Brooklyn product with a single right-hand punch in the second round of their high-profile 140-pound unification bout back in November 2001.

Judah rebounded to claim the undisputed welterweight championship from Cory Spinks in 2005, stopping him in the ninth round.

Tszyu, who fights at junior middleweight, said he would welcome the opportunity to face Judah.

“Yeah, 100 per cent, it’s been in discussion already,” Tszyu, 12-0 (10), told the Herald. “It could happen in the future. What a fight that would be for Australia.

“If the opportunity arises, we would take it. Something like that would bring a lot of interest to the Australian public, everyone would tune in.

“That’s the interest in the sport, having names like this makes it so intriguing. To be able to say my dad it, now I can do it as well.”

Tszyu, who has just turned seven when his father fought Judah, is adamant that the victory would only count if he could get the American out of their quicker than his dad.

“I’ve got to do it in under a round,” said the 24-year-old. “It was right at the end of the second [when dad won], so I have to do it in under two rounds.”

Before that fight can happen Tszyu will need to overcome tough Australian 154-pound champion Joel Camilleri, who he faces on home turf at The Star in Sydney on May 15.

Meanwhile, Judah 44-9 (30) is set to return to the ring in June when he takes on Cletus Seldin 23-1 (19) over 10 rounds at the Turning Stone Resort and Casino in Verona, New York.

The 41-year-old southpaw has fought just twice since losing back-to-back 12-round points decisions to Danny Garcia and Paulie Malignaggi in 2013.

TJ DOHENY SHOWS HIS CLASS IN HARD-FOUGHT DEFEAT TO DANNY ROMAN

TJ Doheny 21-1 (15) may have lost his IBF super bantamweight title to WBA counterpart Danny Roman 27-2-1 (10) in their unification bout at the Forum in Inglewood, California last Saturday night, but he won over the crowd and came away with many new fans after his gutsy performance.

The Sydney-based Irish southpaw had to twice rise from the canvas – first in the second and later in the eleventh – to log a majority decision loss in a thrilling back-and-forth contest that is already being considered one of the fights of the year.

“I got beaten by the best 122 fighter in the world. I said it all along in the build-up, the winner was going to be the best in the world. Danny is the man, I can’t take anything away from him,” the 32-year-old Doheny said after the fight.

Despite the knockdowns it was far from an easy win for Roman, who was hurt in the seventh round and forced to hang on to survive.

“TJ connected with a good shot and I knew I shouldn’t exchange with him,” Roman, 28, said. “He’s a strong guy.”

When the dust settled judge Max DeLuca scored the bout 116-110 for Roman, judge Zachary Young had it 116-110 Roman, while judge Edward Hernandez Sr tallied the fight 113-113 even.

While Roman is looking towards another unification bout with WBC 122-pound boss Rey Vargas 33-0 (22), a rematch with Doheny down the track would be a natural.

BILAL AKKAWY READY TO BREAKTHROUGH ON THE BIG STAGE

Undefeated Sydney banger Bilal Akkawy 20-0-1 (16) is geared up for a breakthrough performance when he takes on British southpaw John ‘The Gorilla’ Ryder 27-4 (15) for the interim WBA super middleweight title at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada this Saturday night.

The fight will be on the undercard of the world middleweight championship bout between Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez and Daniel Jacobs.

Akkawy, 25, is a regular sparring partner of Alvarez and was more than willing to step in to replace original Ryder opponent David Lemieux when the opportunity presented itself.

"This is a big opportunity. It’s an opportunity for me to prove myself,” said Akkawy. “It’s a world title fight so there’s no way I would turn down a fight like that. I’m going to make the most out of the opportunity come Saturday."

The 30-year-old Ryder from London believes the style match-up in this fight will deliver a show-stopping performance for the fans.

"With Lemieux, it was a big upset but we got a great replacement in Bilal Akkawy. I think we’re all in for a real treat come Saturday night," he said.

JASON MOLONEY TARGETING GUILLERMO RIGONDEAUX AND LIBORIO SOLIS

WBA number four ranked bantamweight Jason ‘The Smooth One’ Moloney 18-1 (15) has called for a fight against WBA number two Guillermo Rigondeaux 18-1 (12) or WBA number one ranked contender Liborio Solis 29-5-1 (13).

In his last outing Moloney systematically broke down Filipino Cris Paulino 19-4 (8) to stop him in the fifth round in his first fight back since his split decision loss to IBF boss Emmanuel Rodriguez 19-0 (12) in the quarterfinals of the World Boxing Super Series last October.

"I felt I boxed well against Paulino and I was delighted to be back in the ring,” Moloney said. “I’ve not really stopped training after the Rodriguez fight and that controversial loss has made me a better fighter and I felt that I showed I am a world level fighter in my performance last Saturday evening.

"I have been working on things in the gym with Angelo and I was able to pull those off in the fight and I showed I have multiple dimensions to my game, and that’s what you need at the top level.

"I’d love to fight Solis or Rigondeaux. Solis is a great fighter and Rigondeaux is a legend, so to be able to test myself against the best would be a dream come true and hopefully, it can be for a world title if [Naoya] Inoue is moved up to ’Super Champion’.”
