Fighting for the first time at the iconic Madison Square Garden in New York, Katie Taylor wanted to impress.

Mission accomplished.

Taylor, the IBF and WBA lightweight champion, produced what was arguably the best performance of her professional career last night, slicing and dicing her way to dominant 10-round unanimous decision over gutsy Eva Wahlstrom.

The Bray, Ireland, native got right to work against Wahlstrom. She bounced and jabbed, scoring with right hands. Wahlstrom, the super featherweight champion, who fought Taylor six times in the amateurs, losing every time, tried to find a home for her jab, but Taylor was playing a game of hide-and-seek.

Wahlstrom, who was born in Finland, looked to counter in round three. She landed a right, but ate two lefts and a three-punch combination. Taylor went to the body in round four. Seconds later a combination landed, followed by another. Wahlstrom went back to her corner with her face showing damage, and not a clue how to change what was happening.

Taylor (12-0, 5 KOs) wobbled Wahlstrom (22-0-1, 3 KOs) with a right hook in round five. She connected with a quick left-right-left. Wahlstrom was hanging in, but still couldn’t land anything significant. Taylor’s dominance continued in round seven. She ran into a left hand, but fought back with flashy hands. Both women connected with good punches in round eight.

Wahlstrom, bleeding from a cut on her forehead, and cut over her left eye, continued to eat punches from the relentless Taylor.

With two rounds to go, Taylor was in complete control. A right hand staggered the gutsy Wahlstrom, who looked as if she had been mugged in an alley. She had.

Taylor punctuated her night of work by going to the body with 12 unanswered shots.

All three judges had her winning all 10 rounds.

“I thought it was a very good performance,” Taylor said. “[Wahlstrom is] obviously a fantastic champion and a great, great fighter. I knew it was going to be a great showcase for women’s boxing. It was such a privilege to fight here in Madison Square Garden in front of so many Irish people, so thank you so much for the support.”

Taylor is looking forward to some big fights in 2019.

“The goal is to be the undisputed lightweight champion of the world,” said Taylor said. “Obviously, one of the biggest fighters out there is Amanda Serrano, and that’s a huge, huge fight.”
