By Steve Kim: HBO hasn’t had a very good year when it comes to its boxing programming. This was highlighted on March 29th when the network broadcast a main event that featured Sergey Kovalev defending his WBO light heavyweight belt against the unknown Cedric Agnew, who was listed by bookmakers (who are the real experts most of the time) as high as a 38-1 underdog. To add insult to injury, it was announced earlier that week that Adonis Stevenson would be jumping ship to rival Showtime and Showtime Showcases

By Gabriel Montoya: Over the weekend, I wrote a story in which I compared Paulie Malignaggi to Hamlet when it came to the subject of anti-doping testing beyond what commissions mandate in boxing. While I omitted the fact that Malignaggi underwent testing with USADA for for his June 22, 2013 fight with Adrien Broner, I stand by that comparison. By his own words, the... By Steve Kim (Photo © Tom Casino / SHOWTIME): There was plenty of boxing programming on this Saturday from Showtime’s tripleheader in our nation’s capital, the HBO rebroadcast of Manny Pacquiao-Tim Bradley II, “Solo Boxeo” on UniMas and a fight card from the U.K. on AWE to “The Fight Game with Jim Lampley,” “All Access: Floyd Mayweather-Marcos Maidana” and “Road to Juan Manuel Marquez-Mike Alvarado.” Some random thoughts on what was shown this past weekend... By John J. Raspanti: Continuing to defy Father Time, IBF light heavyweight champion Bernard “The Alien” Hopkins (55-6-2, 32 KOs) captured the WBA lightheavyweight crown by outworking the much younger Beibut Shumenov (14-1, 9 KOs) over 12 rounds at the D.C. By Gabriel Montoya: Early on, 2014 looked like it could be a banner year for the combat sports causes of anti-doping testing and fighters’ health and safety. It has certainly started off with great potential. In early January, Nevada’s athletic commission accepted the resignation of its now-former Executive Director Keith Kizer. Mr. Kizer had been a part of the proliferation of therapeutic usage exemptions for synthetic testosterone for... Porter, Malignaggi and the Trouble with Testing

By Bill Tibbs (Photo © German Villasenor): Boxing is a sport that can survive and thrive for a long time on the strength of a series of bouts - or even a single bout - if the recipe is right. The public interest can be electrified and galvanized to the point that the sport becomes “must see” sports viewing. Whether in series or one-offs, bouts like Joe Frazier-Muhammad Ali, Evander Holyfield-Mike Tyson, Marvelous Marvin Hagler-Sugar Ray Leonard and on a smaller scale... By Steve Kim (Photo © German Villasenor): Noted trainer Freddie Roach is already back to his daily grind at the gym. By John J. By Gabriel Montoya (Photo © Chris Farina / Top Rank): At the moment, the U.S. boxing world is a dual universe commonly described as the “Cold War.” For the most part, this means Top Rank Promotions is on HBO and Golden Boy Promotions/Al Haymon’s stable of fighters is on Showtime. What this means for the boxing fan is there are only certain fights that will get made. When it comes to 140 and 147-pound divisions, what it currently means to Top Rank is that finding talent to be developed... Jessie Vargas “I'm tired of hiding in the shadows”

By Steve Kim: Despite Manny Pacquiao and Tim Bradley squaring off back in June of 2012, in the end, they weren’t the two most talked-about individuals involved. That distinction went to Duane Ford and CJ Ross. The two ringside judges were in the vast minority by scoring the fight for the “Desert Storm” in what was considered the 874th black eye for boxing and about the 43rd time the sport died. Alas... By Steve Kim (Image by icheehuahua, MaxBoxing): Manny Pacquiao is a fighter of many punches. However, most of the time, he’s a man of few words, which is a bit of a problem when you attempt to interview him. No, it’s not that he’s unpleasant or angry with the media - he’s just the opposite in fact - but by nature, he’s a soft-spoken individual (at least with the American press) and while much is on the line this upcoming Saturday night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena How Much Does Pacquiao Have Left?

By: Luis A. Recently signed by Peltz Boxing, Cherry scored a unanimous decision win over the game Robert Osiobe, 14-9-4 (6) with scores of 77-75, 79-73 and 78-74. By Steve Kim: With much fanfare - and to the disappointment of many boxing fans - it was announced last week that the reigning light heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson would be facing Andrzej Fonfara on May 24th in Montreal, Quebec, Canada as part of a deal struck with Showtime (which could eventually lead to a bout against Bernard Hopkins).
