By Matthew Hurley: Now that Manny Pacquiao versus Chris Algieri is a done deal, the PacMan officially revealed himself to be Bob Arum’s puppet on a string. No, this is not as bad as Colonel Tom Parker ripping apart his only client Elvis Presley over nearly twenty-one years but it begs the question, who would Manny be fighting on November 22 had he not signed a contract extension through 2016? Certainly not Algieri... Pacquiao Continues Pay Per View Nonsense

By Benny Henderson Jr: Although boxing is known as the “sweet science” and we as fans respect the talents of many fighters who possess a crafty style, slick defense and lightning speed, it is the knock out that catches the eye. To witness a man drop and stop his opponent with a barrage of blows, or put his foe to sleep... Top 5 Hardest Hitting Heavyweights

By Mark Butcher in Macao (Photo © Chris Farina / Top Rank): New parenthood is a miraculous experience in any man’s life, but also a poignant time of patient love and sacrifice. Recent father Brian Viloria has had to forgo elements of his personal life for his professional one as he pursues his goal of becoming a four-time world champion. That ‘The Hawaiian Punch’ cut such a rested and relaxed figure at the final ‘Champions of Gold’ press conference at the Venetian Casino is a tribute... By John J. Raspanti (Photo © German Villasenor): Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Erislandy Lara had something to prove last Saturday night in Las Vegas, Nevada. They had been arguing for months over who was the better fighter. So who won? Nobody. Alvarez proved that he comes to fight, but after 45 bouts, still doesn’t know how to cut off the ring. Lara can box beautifully at times, but also has a tendency to be more roadrunner than Tasmanian devil. Not that you could blame him for some of his Alvarez chases Lara for 12 rounds before escaping with debatable win

By John J. Raspanti: It’s the nature of the game nowadays. One loss and a career is in jeopardy. Karim Mayfield was riding high when he faced Thomas Dulorme last March in a match-up televised on cable channel HBO. He entered the bout ranked number four by the WBA and number two by the WBO. A win would position him for a shot at a world championship. He exited the squared circle 45 minutes later a first-time loser. A few months ago, Top Rank Boxing, who had signed Mayfield... By Andrew Rivera (Photo © German Villasenor): So the Canelo Alvarez/ Erislandy Lara ended in a 12 round split decision win for Canelo, yes it was close and some may think Lara won, but in boxing these things will happen when you get a contrast in styles. This has happened throughout boxing history where an aggressive fighter like Canelo edges a slick fighter like Lara. I’ve seen on social media the divide on who won is split, some Canelo supporters say he won, some say Lara won... Styles make Fights: Alvarez-Lara, The Aftermath

By Benny Henderson Jr.: I remember the old adage, “you can talk the talk, but can you walk the walk?” Basically telling your foe to shut his mouth and start throwing dukes. And we as boxing fans have come across many great talkers in the game, some who were pretty much mouth, some, well, their hands were just as hard as their words. Throughout the years trash talking has become a sales pitch of sorts, in the minds of many, if bad blood is not brewing, it would appear that... Unforgettable Trash Talkers: Part: One

By Matthew Hurley (Image by icheehuahua, MaxBoxing): As it became apparent that Floyd Mayweather would fill one of the final slots in his ridiculously lucrative Showtime contract with a rematch against Marcos Maidana in September, a collective eye roll spread among many in the boxing world. The fact is, despite Maidana’s spirited effort in fight one, Mayweather closed out the show after the sixth round as he usually does. Michael Pernick’s scorecard of 114-114 was a ridiculous tally... By Ken Hissnr: We’ve seen it so many times how a father in the corner or managing a son turns out bad! Floyd Mayweather, Jr., and his father have had their ups and downs as has Shane Mosley and his father. Today there are three relationships that stand out for me. One is the one between Buddy Harrison and his 19 year-old son Dusty Hernandez-Harrison, 22-0 (12), out of Washington, DC. He turned professional at 16 after 200 amateur fights and many titles... By John J. Raspanti (Photo © Chris Farina / Top Rank): In boxing, one punch can change everything. For four rounds on Saturday night at the Century Link Arena in Omaha, Neb., 2004 Olympic gold medalist Yuriorkis Gamboa boxed beautifully. By Steve Kim: Well, I guess this is it for my run at Maxboxing. You may have heard a few things over the past week or so that I am leaving this website I helped found alongside the likes of Doug Fischer, Gary Randall and Tom Gerbasi in the spring of 2001. Yes, that is true. But I certainly am not leaving the sport of boxing. Quite frankly, I’m a bit of a one-trick pony and the die is cast with me. Besides, there’s nothing else I’d rather do then cover fights and be on the... Farewell but not Goodbye

By Steve Kim: My personal bucket list has always included covering a fight in the state of Nebraska. OK, not really, but believe it or not, I am looking forward to my trip to the “Cornhusker State” this weekend as Terence Crawford defends his WBO lightweight crown against Yuriorkis Gamboa at the CenturyLink Center in Omaha. I have never been to Nebraska; in fact, until a couple of months ago, neither had the promoter of this event, Top Rank Promotions’ Bob Arum, who has promoted bouts across The New Bismarck?

By Ken Hissner: I recently came across comments on one of the best referees I’ve ever seen at the time, Mitch Halpern of Nevada prior to his death. I am a real critic on 90% of the referee’s I see working today but there was something about Halpern that you knew “he was in charge” but didn’t make it “all about him” in the ring. He died a month after his 33rd birthday of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. It’s hard to believe it will be 14 years ago on August 20, 2000... Remembering Top Referee Mitch Halpern

By Steve Kim (Photo © Chris Farina / Top Rank): As the calendar turned to 2014 and Mikey Garcia was looking ahead to his fight versus Juan Carlos Burgos, the dominant storyline was that the talented Garcia was on the fast-track to eventually face Manny Pacquiao. Never mind Garcia was campaigning at 130 pounds and that the “Pac-Man” is a welterweight (who albeit, can probably easily move down to 140 pounds) but this would be the plan for Garcia. Keep him active as possible this year... Next Man Up
