By John J. Raspanti: It pains me to read that former “blood and guts warrior” Matthew Saad Muhammad lies in a Philadelphia cemetery without a headstone. Saad Muhammad died last year at the age of 59. The cause of death was amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. It’s not surprising that in the end, his huge heart was stronger than his body. Saad Muhammad was dropped off at the Benjamin Franklin Parkway in Philadelphia in 1958... Matthew Saad Muhammad lies in an unmarked grave

By John J. Raspanti: The boxer versus the slugger. It’s a cliché, but in this case it’s accurate. Jhonny Gonzalez (the slugger) defends his WBC world featherweight title against Gary Russell Jr. (the boxer) this Saturday night at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada. The styles of the two fighters is potentially the most interesting aspect of their bout. Russell Jr., 26, is all about speed. He’s loaded with it, but as he found out against Vasyl Lomachenko, speed can take you only so far. Opposites attract: Gonzalez meets Russell Jr.

By John J. Raspanti: Tonight on FOX 1 Sports and Fox Deportes, perennial contender Alfonso Gomez (24-6-2, 12 KOs) will battle Yoshihiro Kamegai (25-2-1, 22 KOs) at the Fantasy Springs Casino, in Indio, California. Competing in the hit TV show "The Contender" 11 years ago brought Gomez fame, if not fortune. Gomez was one of 16 contestants vying for a million dollars. By the end of the tournament he was ranked third, not bad for a guy who some thought wouldn’t make it out of the first Gomez and Kamegai set for potential barn burner on Fox Sports 1

By Jason Gonzalez at ringside (Photo © David Spagnolo, Main Events): Montréal, QC - Returning to the squared circle, just 4 months removed from the biggest victory of his career, the unified (WBO, WBA, and IBF) light heavyweight champion, Sergey “The Krusher” Kovalev, of Chelyabinsk, Russia was back to his winning ways. The 31-year-old improved to 27-0-1, (24) further tightening his grip on the 175 pound division. Kovalev scored a sensational eighth round technical knockout over former... By John J. Raspanti (Photo © David Spagnolo, Main Events): IBF, WBA and WBO champion Sergey Kovalev continued his march through the light heavyweight division by stopping former WBC titleholder Jean Pascal in round eight Saturday night at a rocking Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The opening stanza revealed the differences in styles between the two fighters. Pascal is a boxer in an unorthodox way. Kovalev (27-0-1, 24 KOs) can flat out punch. Pascal (29-3, 17 KOs) shot his jab and Sergey Kovalev stops Jean Pascal in exciting slugfest

By Jason Pribila (Photo © German Villasenor, MaxBoxing): Premier Boxing Champions brought their brand to network television on Saturday Night, live from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. This marked the first time that boxing aired in primetime on NBC since Larry Holmes defended his heavyweight title against Carl “The Truth” Williams. Manager, Al Haymon, is investing his own money to showcase his fighters in front of the largest possible audience. He bought the time on NBC with hopes that the series.. By John J. Raspanti (Photo © German Villasenor, MaxBoxing): In a sense, I hate my headline. When Al Hayman announced the debut of a series of high-profile fights on national television, I was thrilled. Boxing and TV have had a relationship with each other for over sixty years. On September 23, 1952, the Gillette Safety Razor Company presented the Rocky Marciano vs. Jersey Joe Walcott on NBC. Sugar Ray Robinson, Archie Moore, Willie Pep, and Rocky Graziano all appeared on Gillette’s F Thurman and Guerrero save PBC from being average

By Derek Bonnett: For once, I am very glad to be wrong. Going into Amnat Ruenroeng’s defense of the IBF flyweight title against Zou Shiming, I did not see much hope for the champion retaining his title in Macao, China. For some time now, I have been proclaiming the Chinese boxing celebrity as "Too Big To Fail" spoofing the economic theory that some financial institutions need government bailouts to avoid crumbling and thus causing even greater repercussions to the entire system at large... By John J. Raspanti: For the past forty years, Jose Sulaiman was the man a top of the World Boxing Council (WBC). In his position as president, he often stirred up controversy. But he also worked, often behind the scenes, to improve the sport of boxing. After his death last January, Jose’s son Mauricio was elected to replace him. One of his priorities in his new post is to continue his father’s efforts in improving ring safety. The senior Sulaiman’s tenure was a mixed bag of WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman works for change

McMorrow, 33, who held the title for two years before being forced to vacate it due to promotional issues, will be fighting in Mexico for the third consecutive time. Raspanti: After years of trash talk and excuses, Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao will finally meet in the ring May 2 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nev., Mayweather said last Friday. Mayweather took to the social-media app called "Shots" to announce the fight was official. With a photo of the signed contract in the background, Mayweather wrote, "What the world has been waiting for has arrived. "Mayweather vs. Pacquiao on May 2, 2015, is a done deal."... By John J. The knockout victory was the 19th consecutive for Golovkin, who also defended his middleweight crown for the 13th time. Golovkin (32-0, 29 KOs) started slowly in the opening stanza. By John J. Raspanti: Paul Smith has managed to get under the skin of WBO super-middleweight champion Arthur Abraham. The pair met last September when Abraham won by unanimous decision. Nearly everyone, excepting Smith’s corner-and his family, had Abraham the victor. The problem was the margin of victory. Two judges scored the fight 117-111 for Abraham, while the third must have been watching another bout. His 119-109 tally was ridiculous. This writer had Abraham ahead by two points. Last Friday night, at the Foxwoods Resorts in Mashantucket, CN., undefeated light heavyweight Sullivan Barrera went in search of an impressive victory. By Derek Bonnett: In 2014, Rocky Juarez did something he had not done in a long time; he strung two victories together for the first time since 2007. Sounds amazing when you put it that way. Not that he actually won two in row (the first was a 2012 stoppage of Antonio Escalante), but that it has been so long since the veteran Juarez has been able to do so. In between those wins, Juarez even took a year off. Juarez’ 2014 win was a surprise decision over Rene Alvarado. Alvarado was a genuine top On the Move: MaxBoxing Rankings 2-2-15
