After speaking to Top Rank and finalizing certain details, Sergio Diaz Jr. - who manages Antonio Margarito, the WBO welterweight champion and number one or two (depending on whom you ask) welterweight in the world - has confirmed that his charge will defend his crown against Manuel ''Shotgun'' Gomez in the featured fight on the Top Rank promoted "Real Warriors" Pay-Per-View card on Saturday, February 18th at the Aladdin Resort and Casino, in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Margarito - Gomez was a fight originally scheduled as the co-feature to the Vitali Klitschko - Hasim Rahman bout, but that show fell apart after Klitschko pulled out due to an injury and subsequently retired from the sport.
''We have been working hard to get Margarito back in the ring, seeing how all of the fighters we have targeted are avoiding him - with Mosley fighting Vargas, Mayorga and De La Hoya now fighting each other, and Mayweather not wanting anything to do with Tony," said Diaz. "But we managed to land the main event on February 18th.''
''Getting past Gomez is imperative," continued Diaz, "as Top Rank has told us a deal has been reached with Don King for Tony to fight for the rest of the welterweight titles in a fight or two down the line.''
Who Margarito will fight for the titles is up in the air, as Judah is penciled in to face the rugged Carlos Baldomir in the Theatre at Madison Square Garden in New York on January 7, 2006.
Should Judah win as expected, the Brooklynite hopes his next fight will be a superfight between himself and Floyd Mayweather Jr., with the winner supposedly to take on Margarito.
''We will do everything we can to secure our long awaited shot at either of them (Judah / Mayweather)," said Diaz. "We cannot overlook Gomez, as he is a dangerous foe, but once we hold all of the titles, they (the big names) will have to come to us. I've said it before and I'll continue to say it - they can run, but not forever.''
''Our opportunity could finally arise in the spring or summer,'' he concluded.
The rest of the card on February 18th will feature WBC's light flyweight champion Brian ''The Hawaiian Punch'' Viloria vs former strawweight champion Jose Antonio Aguirre, the undefeated and long reigning WBO minimumweight weight champion Ivan Calderon, and the very popular Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.
