In the ESPN2 Friday Night Fights main event at the Casino Ballroom in Hampton Beach, New Hampshire, enigmatic and entertaining Emanuel Augustus (30-25-6, 15 KOs) halted punching machine Ray ''Sucra'' Oliveira (47-11-2, 22 KOs) after the eighth round of their welterweight matchup.
Augustus, with his unorthodox fighting style of dancing, clowning, and jumping around, makes opponents look bad while he lands effective shots which befuddle everyone he gets in the ring with. Tonight though, Augustus started the bout in a more conventional stance, fighting almost ''normal'', as he gave as much as he received against the steady punching Oliveira through the first three rounds of the ten rounder.
Augustus began to separate himself in the fourth round as the one legged, off balance and quick fisted boxer fired shots from all angles, landing some very good uppercuts in the round.
The action really heated up in the fifth, as Oliveira took Augustus against the ropes, and banged away upstairs as well as to the body, with Augustus working out of the corner with uppercuts and repeated short, overhand rights to his opponent’s head, getting the fight back to the center of the ring. Amidst the showboating, a few good left hooks
thrown by Oliveira upstairs seemed to bother Augustus in the round.
The sixth round featured good lead right hands thrown by Augustus as the pressuring
Oliveira managed to land some very good right hands of his own to Augustus’ head.
Oliveira's best round came in the seventh, as he looked to outwork Augustus on the inside, as Augustus took a small break from the unorthodox maneuvers.
Augustus came out in a very relaxed state in the eighth, and he immediately landed an uppercut to Oliveira's chin. Midway through the round, Oliveira looked to be in pain as Augustus landed a glancing shot above his left ear, forcing him to immediately hold the opposite side of his head.
Oliveira, in severe pain, was almost crying as he held the right side of his head and let his hands go in a last ditch effort before a time out was called for the ringside doctor to take a close look at the obviously hurt fighter. After a few moments, the doctor let the fight continue, with Oliveira making it out of the round, but the bout was called after the eighth round by referee Steve Smoger as he wisely determined that Oliveira was in no shape to continue.
Oliveira, who came in at 150 pounds and had to give up half of his purse in order to stay in the fight, suffered the second stoppage loss of his long career. He was coming off a KO loss in 10 rounds at the hands of the newly crowned world super lightweight champion, Ricky Hatton.
LeHoullier decisions Medina in eight
Jason LeHoullier upped his record to 17-0, with 8 KOs by outpointing Jose Medina, now 8-4, with 3 KOs, in an eight round super welterweight bout.
The bout really started after the third round as LeHoullier sent Medina down for a flash knockdown in the fourth round as he snapped a short, inside right hand during an attempted exchange by Medina.
Medina came back to slightly outwork his foe in the fifth and sixth rounds, as he worked the jab a bit better than what he had done at the onset of the bout, as well as outhustling LeHoullier to make the fight closer.
The seventh round saw LeHoullier send Medina's mouthpiece flying into the stands, but not before suffering bruised eyes in the best round of the fight to that point.
LeHoullier knocked Medina's mouthpiece out twice in the eighth and final round, with Medina going back into the battle certainly knowing he was behind the eight ball.
Scores were 76-75, 77-75 and 77-74, all for LeHoullier.
Firecracker Fiorentino sweeps Laracuente in six
Female lightweight Missy Fiorentino (12-0, 6 KOs) bullrushed Belinda Laracuente (21-10-2, 9 KOs), throwing punches virtually non-stop in the scheduled six rounder, as Laracuente tried to box and counterpunch, but ended up backed up against the ropes, covering up for the majority of their fight.
Fiorentino received a stern warning in the fifth round for leading with her head.
The action resumed in the sixth and final round with Fiorentino easily taking the round once more.
Fiorentino wins the bout with scores of 60-54 on all cards.
Laracuente, once one of the best female fighters in the world, fought Christy Marting back in 2000 in a fight many believed Laracuente should have received the nod in.
