UNCASVILLE, Conn., April 4 Monte Barrett wanted a tough fight and he got a tough fight. Taking the fight on three days' notice, Barrett pulled out a 10-round split decision over Robert Wiggins Friday at Mohegan Sun Casino.
George Smith and Julie Lederman scored it 96-94 for Barrett (28-2, 15 KOs); Richard Flaherty scored it 97-93 for Wiggins (17-3-1, 10 K Os).
"The guy was tough; I needed a tough fight," said Barrett, who last fought three weeks ago and was training for a fight on April 25. "He was so damned awkward."
Wiggins, a southpaw, began to close the distance on the taller Barrett in the fourth round, landing looping left hands.
"Getting under his jab was the most important part," said Wiggins. "But I wasn't busy enough."
Both men were cut along their left eyes after a head butt in the third round.
"He was hitting me with elbows, his head, biceps, everything," said Barrett. "He was like a pit bull."
Said Wiggins, "I though he initiated a lot of the butts. He did so much holding.
"I thought it was a close fight, but I didn't bob and weave enough. I made his job too easy. He fought a smart fight."
Barrett replaced Ray Mercer, who withdrew from the fight on Monday with a back injury.
In January, Wiggins dropped a 10-round decision to DaVarryl Williamson, but broke Williamson's jaw in the process.
Light heavyweights Glen Johnson and Daniel Judah fought to a 10-round draw. The scores were 97-93 for Judah, 97-93 for Johnson and 95-95. There were no knockdowns and Johnson landed the harder punches in the late rounds. Johnson is now 38-9-1 (27); Judah is 17-0-2 (7).

Greg Torres of Trenton, NJ scored a six-round unanimous decision over former three-time world champion Kennedy McKinney at lightweight. Torres (15-2, 7 KOs) did his best work after being hurt by McKinney, dropping the former champion with a right hook in the third round. McKinney dropped to 36-6-1 with 19 KOs and announced his retirement after the fight. The scores were 60-53 (twice) and 58-55.
Craig Salamone of Portland, Conn. won a six-round unanimous decision over Dan Sheehan of Brockton, Mass in a cruiserweight bout. All three judges scored it 60-54 for Salamone, who is now 14-2-1 with four KOs. Sheehan dropped to 9-22 with four KOs.
