DaVarryl Williamson overcame a broken jaw to chalk up his 18th professional win after out-pointing Robert Wiggins (17-2-1) on ESPN2 'Friday Night Fights' on January 10.
Williamson (18-1) was matched up against southpaw, Robert Wiggins. Williamson dropped the very game Wiggins in both the 3rd and 8th rounds, but Wiggins, who was fighting on his home turf, in front of friends and family was not going to stay down no matter what Williamson did.
"If there were any doubts about DaVarryl Williamson's chin or heart, they were answered last Friday," said advisor Lou DiBella, president of DiBella Entertainment. "To fight six rounds with a broken jaw shows true courage."
> The broken jaw may have been
a blessing in disguise, as it forced Williamson to shake of 6 months worth
of ring rust and go back to his boxing skills instead of brawling with
Wiggins. The eight round saw Williamson moving well, utilizing his jab and
firing uppercuts each time his smaller opponent tried to close the
distance. A right uppercut, followed by a left hook dropped Wiggins for
the second time, and seemingly took the 'fight' out of him. Williamson
will have minor surgery, and it is not expected to cause any future
issues.
