Promoter Don King spoke to the camp of WBA heavyweight titlist John Ruiz over the weekend and assured them that the fight with Roy Jones is essentially done and all that remains to be figured out is when and where the bout takes place, sources close to the negotiation told MaxBoxing.com.
The bout will likely take place in January or February, and the leading candidate for the venue is the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.
"I spoke to Don over the weekend and he informed me that everything was fixed and done," Norman Stone, manager of Ruiz, told Carlos Narvaez of the Puerto Rican daily El Vocero. "Don will tell us today or Tuesday where the fight is going to be held. I hope it's done at the Mandalay Bay or at Madison Square Garden. But I prefer the Mandalay Bay because we have fought there before and we are familiar with the place and we have a great relationship with the hotel president Tony Alamo."
When Ruiz first learned that the fight with Jones was close to being made, he decided to begin training in the Poconos in Pennsylvania but according to Stone they will be moving the training camp to a warmer location.
"We plan to start camp the second week of November and we are going to be moving down to Fort Myers, Florida. We will be changing training facilities because the climate in Fort Myers is warm like in Puerto Rico and we have a lot of sparring contacts in that area, also we have to do a press conference stop in Puerto Rico so we are closer."
