It looks like the proposed fight between WBA heavyweight champion John Ruiz and undisputed light heavyweight champion Roy Jones is closer than we thought to being made.
Sources close to the Ruiz camp told MaxBoxing.com that "the Quietman" left his new home in Las Vegas yesterday to report to training camp in the Poconos to get ready for Jones. It was also reported in El Vocero, a Puerto Rican daily newspaper, that the Ruiz camp was told that Jones was on board and has agreed to the contract.
"Everything is ready to go," Ruiz' manager Norman Stone told Carlos Narvaez of El Vocero. "The fight is made and Roy Jones finally agreed to the contract."
However, according to Jones' adviser, Murad Muhammad, negotiations are not yet finished.
"On a scale from 1 to 10 we are at 8," said Muhammad, who is waiting on word from HBO, which will televise the bout on its pay-per-view arm. "We couldn't finish negotiations this Saturday because obviously the people at HBO do not work over the weekend, but King and I do. Everything will be settled between Monday and Tuesday."
Murad told the press over the weekend that Jones was very pleased with the negotiations between both camps and he believes that the fight can take place.
"They (Ruiz's team) have acceded to our requests and have heard all of our concerns" said Muhammad. "We have a lot of respect for John because he is the first Latino heavyweight champion, but the belt looks like it is a little to big for him and that also goes for Holyfield and Byrd. Roy's stature is as big as the crown."
The final contracted purse agreement between both fighters is reported to be $10 million for Jones and $6.7 million for Ruiz.
