In Casamayor-Katsidis undercard action at the Morongo Casino Resort & Spa in Cabazon, California, highly touted middleweight prospect Daniel Jacobs delivered an impressive first round stoppage of Matt Palmer. Jacobs (4-0, 4 KOs) used his jab early and caught Palmer with a hard left hook to the body that put him down halfway through the first round. Another body attack by Jacobs put Palmer (2-2) down for a second time as the referee stepped in and put a halt to the bout.
In a featherweight bout, Puerto Rico’s Juan Velasquez outboxed Guerrero, Mexico native Tomas Bernal en route to a unanimous decision win in the first fight of the night. All three judges had it a sweep for Velasquez as he improved to 7-0 with 4 KOs. Bernal falls to 3-6 (2 KOs).
The second half of the Velasquez team, Juan’s brother, Carlos, won a unanimous decision over veteran journeyman Manuel Sarabia. Velasquez controlled most of the fight with a jab and consistent body work that would constantly drive Sarabia back and at times into the ropes. Judges’ scores were 59-55 and 60-54 twice.
