After being sidelined with ulcers the past few months, IBF lightweight titlist Paul Spadafora could be making his return on October 18th on a small pay-per-view show from either somewhere in Connecticut or in his hometown of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Said Mike Acri, who promotes 'Spaddy', "Yes, me and Lou DiBella are working together on this. It'll be a four fight show, and there will be some good fights."
Acri is under no illusions about this show, and while it won't do big numbers, it's a way to get Spadafora going again and headed into bigger and better things.
"We'd like to take on the winner of Mayweather-Castillo next year but we might also have a chance at taking on the winner of Ward-Gatti," explained Acri. "Eventually, Paul is going to have to move up to 140 pounds because he
can't make 135 forever."
Acri says that Spadafora currently weighs somewhere in the low 150's and that his health is fine.
"It's great. That ulcer was the best thing to happen to him. He's eating a lot healthier now. He's got this guy cooking for him that can make sandpaper taste good."
TAYLOR TIDBIT
Jermain Taylor, coming off his glorified sparring session this past weekend against Sam Hill, will most likely be a part of that October 18th undercard. Taylor was to have faced Brandon Mitchem on August 30th on Friday Night Fights.
"He went running yesterday and he was sore, in spite of the fact he was giving not catching," explained Mark Vaz, who is a part of Taylor's management team."After running six miles he just felt a little achy and he just didn't feel he had enough time and was rushing too much into this.
Continued Vaz, "He wanted to take the time to be properly prepared for it because he feels as though when he's going to fight on TV, he should be 110-percent, because in any kind of televised fight, ESPN or HBO, you gotta look right because there's a helluva lot more people out there that are going to say that you look lousy, not developing, so on and so forth. Instead of saying,'Geez, he took that fight on 10 days notice."
TRUTH IN ADVERTISING?
Did I hear that correctly? After watching another great episode of HBO's 'Hard Knocks', I saw a promo for Roy Jones' latest mis-mandatory against Clinton Woods on September 7th.
It referred to Woods as,' Europe's top light-heavyweight contender' Huh? What in the world does that make Dariusz Michalczewski? Remember, HBO doesn't recognize the WBO as a 'real' title.
Couldn't they have described Woods as 'a mandatory challenger' or ' top rated contender' or something to that effect? But to word it in a way that suggests Woods is highly respected is disingenuous and wrong. But I still love 'Hard Knocks'.
