Savarese Bombs Out Glesby
by Steve Kim (Tuesday June 12, 2001)
Lou Savarese kept his career going with an easy third-round knockout over former Canadian Olympian Tom 'the Bomb' Glesby at the Reliant AstroArena in Houston, Texas in a bout televised by ESPN2.
Savarese, with another win or two will most likely be deemed 'marketable' once again (which really means: white heavyweight with a good record) and be used as an opponent for the division's elite looking for some rounds and a W.
Glesby, who came in looking anything but Olympian, drops further out of sight (or maybe to 'ThunderBox').
After a slow round one in which Savarese controlled the action with his heavy jab, Big Lou started to open up in the second stanza and dropped a bomb on Glesby in the form of an overhand right just before the end of the round.
Savarese then put Glesby and the television audience out of it's misery by landing a sharp one-two combo that finished Glesby (who never really got started).
Savarese improves to 41-4, while registering his 34 knockout. Glesby drops to 26-3-1.
In a more professional battle, a pair of Texas featherweights put on a good show and it was Manuel Sepeda who improved to 12-5-2 with a clear cut unanimous verdict over David Donis, who dropped to 16-3-2.
Donis seemed to have the advantage in speed and threw the quicker and flashier combinations, but it was Sepeda who was more effective, throwing well-timed and accurate counter punches.
Both Donis and Sepeda engaged in some heated exchanges, and it was Sepeda who was the sharp-shooter. Twice he sent Donis to the canvas. In round three, a good solid right hand would
topple Donis (who got up easily) and then in round five, a pair of sharp jabs sent Donis to the canvas once again.
The action was steady and consistent, with Donis continuing to press the action, but Sepeda who suffered a cut over his right eye with a clash of heads in the third round was the one who was more precise and sharper with his punches.
At the end of 10 spirited rounds, Sepeda, who was coming off a loss to former world champion Junior Jones took home the unanimous decision by scores of 96-91, 95-92 and 96-91.
In between, in a ladies bout, Lanie Ellis improved to 4-0 with a unanimous decision over Rima Freeman, who dropped to 2-1.
It wasn't the best night of boxing for ESPN2. In fact it could be said that boxing fans would have been better served watching ESPN Classic, which had a doubleheader of Sugar Ray Leonard in some of his most memorable matches against Marvin Hagler and Wilfred
Benitez.
